Wells is looking good and I think Ryan D is coming back too soon. This weekend was nice now the real work is on them to try and hold 1st and distance themselves from Houston.

Game 1 should be outstanding, as Zambrano has been good over several starts and Rodriguz has been very good this season-particularly at home. I DO NOT like the match-up in game 2, as Oswalt has been pitching very well in his past several starts and Dempster is coming off an injury, which will likely limit the number of pitches he can throw. Game 3 is a more favorable pairing, with the Cubs facing Hampton and Randy Wells looking to continue his win streak. The finale looks pretty good too. Russ Ortiz pitched well against the Cubs earlier this season, but hasn't an earned run average that suggests the Cubs should get to him. Kevin Hart is coming off back, to back wins, but they were against the Nationals and the Reds, so I'm not going to get too giggly about that. On paper it looks like a split. But if Z wins game 1, the Cubs may take 3 of 4.

I agree. Oswalt might have turned it around a little of late, but he has gotten hit hard in more than a few games this year.

Where would the Cubs be with out Randy Wells & Kevin Hart? So far,both have stepped up big time. That's the problem with Hendry. He signs so many Free Agents,there is no room on the roster for anyone else to get a chance. David Patton had to be kept on the roster,other then that,I think it was the usual vet's.

Looked human of late, as in not real impressive? Well, he had the Cardinals shut out through 6 innings before giving up 3 in the 7th. Still, 3 runs over 7 inning to the Cards is not too shabby. But lets look at the start before that on July 17th against the majors best-the Dodgers. He went the whole 9 innings, giving up 1 run. On July 10th, he probably wasn't real excited to face the Nationals and gave up 3 earned in 6 innings. But in the start before that, he went 8 innings against the Wild Card leading Giants and gave up just 1 run(3 hits). Oh and the start before that, against the Padres....another complete game. A 2 hitter, where again, he yielded just 1 run. So his earned run average over the previous 5 games 2.30 . If you add in the start before that vs Kansas City, where he went 6 and gave up just 1 run, its even lower. So if you are talking about basically the last inning of his last start, yes he wasn't all that impressive. But if you look at his last half dozen starts, he has been very, very good. One thing I did notice though, in the starts on the road, he has been much better, while his less impressive starts have been in Houston. Perhaps that trend will continue and the Cubs can get the win versus their ace.

Steve - I thought Oswalt had a stretch in late May early June where he had either 3 or 4 bad outings put together, but maybe I'm wrong. I haven't followed him as closely this year but I thought I remembered him hitting a fairly rough patch unlike him in previous years.

I don't know what Wandy's road numbers are this year, but in years past, hasn't he had bigger ERA away from the Dome? I think I have that right. If that's the case, may his road woes continue. If Z is solid tonight (especially mentally, though it's amazing we have to worry about that), we have a decent shot at 3 of 4. However, I imagine that they'll split as the Astros are a step up in class and the Cubs are a middle of the road team. Hart is doing it with mirrors so far, but then again, I thought that about Wells. Wells has acquitted himself rather well so far this season.

The BA is interesting. The Cubs are going right along with that model with 5 hits but only one run on a solo bomb by DLee. Proves you can hit him, but you've got to finish the deal. You get someone on base, especially in scoring position and no outs, you damn well better bring him home or you'll regret it.
