Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports that the Cubs and Nationals "are stepping up" their pursuit of free agent right-hander Brandon Webb.
Fantasy spin: Other teams have expressed interest, but the Nats and Cubs are both being aggressive and have the resources to get a deal done. Webb hasn't pitched in a major league game since the first week of the 2009 season because of shoulder issues, but he's displayed improved velocity in recent throwing sessions. He should be able to score an incentive-laden one-year deal.

Riggins, formerly the Cubs' minor league pitching coordinator, replaces Larry Rothschild, who left to become the New York Yankees pitching coach in November after nine years in that position with the Cubs.

Riggins, 53, joined the Cubs system in 2008 after 29 years in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. He held a variety of positions with St. Louis, including his only stint as a major league pitching coach, in 1995, Joe Torre's last season as Cardinals manager.

Bullpen coach Lester Strode was also under consideration for the position. Strode will return to the same position for next season.

Wood was fantastic down the stretch for the Yankees, posting a 1.23 ERA and 0.69 WHIP in 26 innings. That came after an unimpressive run in Cleveland, though, so it's unclear if anyone would be willing to offer him a ninth inning job. The Cubs are reportedly interested in bringing him back, but that would also be as a setup man. Dec. 6


The homer in me is all about bringing him back. I couldn't justify spending any sort of money on him though at this point in his career. Maybe if he took a ridiculous hometown discount...Those numbers for the 26 games are slightly deceiving as he had a lowish BABIP and a really high walk rate.

If we did bring him back, I'd want it strictly as a 7th/8th inning type guy which would make the move of Cashner to the rotation easier.


Edit for Stats: He threw 26 innings on the Yankees, with the 1.23 ERA, but his BABIP was .236 so he was lucky so have such a good era considering he walked 29 guys during that time. Very marmol-ish there

Well, he's a career .241 hitter but his last two seasons are .227 and .196. Will a move to the NL improve that? I wouldn't mind him for a reasonable price, but Boras-Hendry negotiations don't sound promising to me.
