This is DOUBLE what Machado signed for in 2019. Machado was 26yr, not 30 going into a second Tommy John surgery. Not the same thing.

Ask me how I feel if they don't sign Bellinger or trade for Soto and sign him to a long contract. Those two are in 2019 Machado range.

600MIL for Ohtani is insane and not worth the money on pure baseball talent. These teams are banking on marketing and off the field revenue to justify the 600MIL but will not factor that in when they talk about team total payroll.

in the normal progression scenario he won't pitch next year, will have troubles the next year then may return to some form in year three

It's ok. We didn't want Ohtani anyway. We got Counsel in free agency. He's worth 5-7 wins.

When it comes down to it, Cubs would only have him the one year. So it is what it is when the most powerful agent in history is pulling the strings.

Yeah it seems dumb to me to give up things for a guy like that where you know there is no hope of an extension. He is going to free agency.

Judge's 6'9" frame might be a problem in CF though. Could be some ouchies. Maybe put him in LF and Stanton full time DH?

I would have given up Morel and a prospect outside of the Cubs top 5(Brown, Alcantara) for 1 year of Juan Soto

Grisham will play CF most of the time.

I'm not sure why they acquired Verdugo. I guess to DH when Stanton is inevitably hurt.

That’s not really the point though. They are a perennial contender that has shown they are willing to spend money to stay that way. Adding Ohtani only boosts their chances.


It is the point. Their starting pitching sucks. They also weren't willing to spend money to resign Corey Seager or Trea Turner. And there's no such thing as a perennial contender. The 90s Braves had an ending. Stan Kasten knows that. .

Teams like the Astros and Rangers are in a much better position to compete for a championship. And there's no income tax in Texas! Same goes for the Braves or Phillies. All 4 teams are in a better position than the Dodgers.
