I'd say that was true if you were signing him for league minimum. Scott Baker stole $5 million which did impact talent acquisition for the team. They could have taken that money to get Keppinger.

Semanitics, its a low risk gamble.

For a big market team, its worth it.

Its much more worth it to pay $10-15 million for 2 or 3 Scott Baker types than it is to give Edwin Jackson the years and money they did.

That was what I hated about Hendry's handling of Kerry Wood. Every year he would lament that "no one knew Woodie would get hurt this year," despite the fact everyone knew he would be hurt again and there was no backup plan.

White Sox acquired LHP Sean Bierman from the Rays to complete the Jesse Crain trade.

He's a 25 yr old lefty starter with a 3.00 ERA in 150 innings and he has a cool last name. I'm not sure if it's a steal but it is a pretty decent return for a guy who didn't throw a pitch for the Rays.

When you are 24 and just at A+, sounds like a career minor leaguer.

Probably but he is a lefty which means he has a shot at scratching out a career as a loogy.

So reading more on him...He had Tommy John surgery in 2010. He tops out in the high 80's and has a sinker, curve and cutter. His groundball rate was high in the minors (near 60%)

So basically he's Mark Buerhle-like with arm trouble in his past.

Trade got better - they added Ben Kline - 25 year old 3B with no power.

The baffling thing is how the Rays gave up anything. Crain had a sore arm. Took a month off and still had a sore arm. Right then and there you knew the knife was the only thing that was going to help him.

They gave up two A level players with little to no chance of making it to the majors. I guess the Sox get some farm depth and that's about it. Bierman could surprise but based on what is seen with Kline - no chance he progresses up the ladder.

Kline went to Embry–Riddle Aeronautical University. I can't beleive they have a baseball team.
