It's not just my stance on Danks, I have what you might call an anti-stance regarding the way the game has come to be viewed through statistics which are ultimately averages.

I hate when I hear someone say a guy "pitched well enough to win". If he had pitched well enough to win, he would have won. I guess what the guy is really saying is that the pitcher pitched well enough to win some hypothetical game vs. a different team in a different ballpark with different weather conditions and a different plate umpire than the game he was actually pitching on the day he actually pitched.

It's easy to assume that a guy with a low ERA will eventually have a good W/L record, but it isn't always true and it isn't always due to factors other than the pitcher himself.

Back to Danks, I'm not ready to call the guy gutless. I remember him letting it all hang out in the "Blackout Game". But for the better part of two seasons now he's been pitching just well enough to lose a lot of the time. His team scores and gives him a lead, the next half-inning he gives it up- or at least tries to give it up.

I hate the deal with Danks. A couple years back I really thought he was going to turn into one of the best pitchers in the league over the next 10 years.

If you looked at the career numbers of Jose DeLeon juxtaposed against those of Jack McDowell without having any idea of who either guy was, you'd easily think that DeLeon was the better pitcher. They played on the same team in the prime of their careers and the guy with the lesser numbers was a Cy Young winner and undisputed ace of his staff and the other guy was a fucking mop-up man.
