even though the angels are basically out of the race, they wanted to get out from under the fuentes contract for a hot minute. even with captain 48 saves they still went out and got fernando rodney, who they went to early in teh season probably due to injury.
fuentes is 35 years old. he throws straight. granted, if you look at his career after a 3.93/1.40 ERA/WHIP last year he has rebounded to get to the aforementioned 3.25/1.20, but this guy has blowup potential written all over him. mark my words... sure he's a power arm type, but like, i don't think this move sways the division all that much because clearly the white sox could have had him, and hell they could probably use him, but the fact they didn't even put in a claim to block the twins says something to me. i mean, don't 95% of waiver claims during the month of august go down just to block somebody? or is it a situation where like with alex rios we speculated that the sox put in a claim on him with no intention to get him, and then the jays were like SEE YA and the sox were like "oh fuck" ?!
the manny thing could/should be interesting. i wonder if his warning track power would end up being homerun power at comiskey...
Manny's power at Comiskey doesn't matter.....Manny's power at U.S. Cellular does. Yeah, it's a friendlier ballpark for hitters and you would think he should prosper there.
Fuentes is 35 and was probably used too much last season. The number of times he was used allowed him to total 48 saves, but is also one reason they went out and got Fernando Rodney. I don't think Fuentes is an elite closer (despite the 48 saves last year) but he's a good pitcher. To compare him with Karchner though....that was ridiculous. 4 years with 30 or more saves, compared to a guy with 27 total saves in his career....Fuentes had far more in 2009 alone.
