This is the guy we should have claimed today, not Ramirez, especially after losing Putz and Thornton to the DL.

Brian Fuentes has had great success in past years as a closer. He had 48 saves (FORTY EIGHT) just last year with the Angels and has 23 THIS SEASON with a 4-1 record and a 3.52 ERA. The guy has 4 seasons of 30 or more saves. Comparing him to Matt Karchner is ridiculous. Those who say the Sox should have gone after him are correct. He is a guy who could have helped them. But perhaps the Twins had more to offer in a deal. He was obtained for a player to be named later, but the Twins have had a great minor league system and are likely to have more attractive players to offer from their system. But back to Karchner....in what way do you see them as similar?? Fuentec is a lefty that has had 4 seasons with 30 or more saves and a total of 186 saves in his career. Fuentes had a season high of 48 saves last season. Fuentes lifetime ERA is 3.48 also. Karchner on the other hand (literally-he's right handed), had just 27 saves in his entire CAREER. His high water mark was only 15. Exactly how do you feel Karchner compares with Fuentes??? Its a stupid comparison.

even though the angels are basically out of the race, they wanted to get out from under the fuentes contract for a hot minute. even with captain 48 saves they still went out and got fernando rodney, who they went to early in teh season probably due to injury.

fuentes is 35 years old. he throws straight. granted, if you look at his career after a 3.93/1.40 ERA/WHIP last year he has rebounded to get to the aforementioned 3.25/1.20, but this guy has blowup potential written all over him. mark my words... sure he's a power arm type, but like, i don't think this move sways the division all that much because clearly the white sox could have had him, and hell they could probably use him, but the fact they didn't even put in a claim to block the twins says something to me. i mean, don't 95% of waiver claims during the month of august go down just to block somebody? or is it a situation where like with alex rios we speculated that the sox put in a claim on him with no intention to get him, and then the jays were like SEE YA and the sox were like "oh fuck" ?!

the manny thing could/should be interesting. i wonder if his warning track power would end up being homerun power at comiskey...

Manny's power at Comiskey doesn't matter.....Manny's power at U.S. Cellular does. Yeah, it's a friendlier ballpark for hitters and you would think he should prosper there.

Fuentes is 35 and was probably used too much last season. The number of times he was used allowed him to total 48 saves, but is also one reason they went out and got Fernando Rodney. I don't think Fuentes is an elite closer (despite the 48 saves last year) but he's a good pitcher. To compare him with Karchner though....that was ridiculous. 4 years with 30 or more saves, compared to a guy with 27 total saves in his career....Fuentes had far more in 2009 alone.

The Twins lost their 2 lefties in the bullpen for the year in Ron Mahay and Jose Mijares. They replaced them with Randy Flores and Brian Fuentes. These moves didn't 'add' anything to the team and didn't make them better than they were before the injuries.

This is typical of Sox fans...take an aquisition made by a competing team and try to minimize that players value. Brian Fuentes has 4 seasons of 30 or more saves with 48 coming last year. He saves the game (a 1-0 Twins victory) in his first appearance as a Twin and here you want to compare him to Ron Mahay and Jose Mijares. Mahay has 5 career saves and Mijares has yet to save a single game. You think this doesn't make them better??

Besides, the point was not that the aquisition made them better than they were prior to the injuries to the aforementioned pitchers (though it does). It was that it makes them better than they were prior to their addition. Sox fans.....

i wonder when it will finally dawn on steve that no one really cares what he thinks here. i guess he figures that sometime in the future, when mankind is extinct, somehow some other species will find this message board as some kind of artifact, relic of a human record, and say..."Wow. That Elmhurst Steve had some really good thoughts on Sox baseball...whatever that is."

Fuentes picked up the save last night. Guess he "added" to the win column eh? Fucking idiot.

He came in and got one lefty out which is exactly what Mijares did. That's called a LOOGY, genius.

Really? Then why zero career saves for Mijares? These are called facts.

Rare one out save opportunity. We'll see how many three out save opportunities he gets and how he does in those situations.

Exactly! When someone wants to compare a guy with zero career saves (and another guy with just 5 career saves) to one with 187 now, including 48 in a single season, I have to call BULLSHIT, on that comparison. If I compared Fuentes to Mariano Riviera, I would expect the same.
