Why not simply retain Hoiberg? That would have been the cheapest thing to do.
I don't think you get the point about Parker. They are throwing money away by not playing him. If they can waste 20 mil on him then they can most certainly spring for a new coach.
Garpax made a call to ax Hoiberg because he was underperforming, as most everyone here knew for a long time. To minimize the financial repercussions of that move they installed Boylen as HC for this year and most probably next year. I think the only way they fire Boylen and hire a new guy is if the public perception of Boylen is so bad that they think it'll affect attendence figures for next year or other concerns related to revenue. Otherwise, absent that kind of PR disaster, I think they keep Boylen as a low paid HC just to again minimize costs for the HC since they're still paying Hoiberg. Once Hoiberg is off the books they have more freedom to shop around.
Another reason it doesn't look like they'll get a new HC is the basic presentation they'll have to make to the other executives:
Garpax: Boylen sucks so we need to hire a new guy.
Executives: so you want to pay three coaches next year? Will this new guy get you to the playoffs so we can at least get a decent ROi for all this dough you want to spend on three coaches?
Garpax: no we're not making the playoffs next year
Executives: [blank stares]
You aren't making much sense. You keep suggesting that it is about money and not results yet in Hoiberg's case it was about lack of results. If Garpax are unconcerned about results then they would have retained Hoiberg.
I think they knew the day they hired Boylen as head coach that he was nothing more than a glorified assistant coach. They outwardly support him because they don't want the team to quit on him. They still have to evaluate the young core in order too see what they have going forward. If Boylen is known to be a lame duck then players might quit and simply wait on the new guy to come aboard.
1 mil is peanuts to eat. They have left themselves too much wiggle room for a guy they supposedly are backing.
