What the Hawks have done with Panik is how you use a project player like him: simplify his game down to doing one thing really well and make him do it a lot. It's just like how the Hawks fashioned a well-rounded but unfinished Michael Frolik into an elite penalty killer. (Having 2013's unenforced salary cap to pay Michael Frolik to be an elite penalty killer, of course, helped.)

Yeah, I was thinking about Kruger, but it's hard to call him a true project player when he's only ever been in one organization: no team ever gave up on him. (I think four have given up on Viktor Stalberg.) But yeah, I do remember when people heralded Marcus Kruger as a genuine #2 center, and to say that never came to pass is quite an understatement.
