The Chicago Blackhawks announced today that they have acquired forward Jiri Sekac (SEH-katch) from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for forward Ryan Garbutt.

Sekac, 23, has posted three points (1G, 2A) in 22 games with Anaheim this season, his second in the National Hockey League. The Kladno, Czech Republic, native also appeared in the 2015 NHL All-Star Skills Competition. He split the 2014-15 campaign with the Ducks and Montreal Canadiens, collecting 14 assists, 23 points and 22 penalty minutes in 69 regular-season contests; he also appeared in seven 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs games with Anaheim. Originally signed as a free agent by Montreal on July 1, 2014, he was traded to Anaheim on Feb. 24, 2015. He previously tallied 39 points (13G, 26A) in 109 regular-season games with the Kontinental Hockey League’s Lev Praha (2011-14), in addition to eight points (1G, 7A) in 24 postseason tilts.

Garbutt, 30, has collected six points (2G, 4A) and 94 hits in 43 games with Chicago this season, after being acquired from Dallas on July 10, 2015. The Winnipeg native has notched 76 points (32G, 44A) over 241 career games with Chicago and Dallas (2011-15).

Guess I am having a hard time understanding why the Ducks make this deal?

Quote:
By Jay Zawaski–

(CBS) On Thursday morning, the Blackhawks traded the last remaining piece from last summer’s Patrick Sharp trade. Yes, the Ryan Garbutt era is over. What’s your favorite memory?

Garbutt is headed to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for 23-year old Jiri Sekac. In Sekac, the Hawks acquire a young left winger with some offensive upside. He’s an average skater, but comes with great shot. This season in Anaheim, he’s only registered three points in 22 games, spending most of his time on the offensively-challenged Ducks’ fourth line.

Salary cap-wise, Sekac’s cap hit is $925,000, compared to Garbutt’s $900,000, but Sekac, who is signed to a two-way deal, is a restricted free agent after next season. At worst, the Hawks could get some much needed cap relief for next season. At best, Sekac discovers his game in Chicago, and becomes another affordable, flexible winger.

You have to wonder what this deal means for Marko Dano’s immediate future with the team. This is the second left winger the Hawks have acquired this month. It would appear as if Dano is destined to spend the entire season in Rockford, which is a bit of a surprise. The Hawks used a similar plan with Teuvo Teravainen, and that worked out. We’ll see how it goes with Dano.

With this deal, the Blackhawks have $2,324,914 of cap space, according to GeneralFanager.com.

Maybe they catch lightning in a bottle with Sekac. At least they clear out salary for next year.

Garbutt had 6 pts. Sekac has 3 pts.
All this did was free up a little money. It's a decent move but doesn't help nor hurt.

I could care less that the players returned for Sharp are no longer on the team. The Sharp deal was to free up cap space...nothing more. They were painted into a corner and very limited on trade partners. I'd love to know what was rejected before the final deal was made. It's always appeared that they held out to long but maybe none of the 8 eligible teams were willing to offer.

Bowman signed Panarin and made out like a Rockstar from the Saad trade. Even if we call the Sharp trade a bust, he's still ahead.

Cool, now we have two Richard Paniks instead of one Ryan Garbutt.

I'm pretty optimistic about Richard Panik. Project players get a bad rap, and often from me when it comes to guys like Viktor Stalberg, but if we're to round out a roster with cheap guys out of necessity, let it be with toolsy decent-upside guys like Panik and Rasmussen rather than bums like Bickell and Garbutt. Not quite the same, but if we can get Lee Stempniak out of Jersey for the home stretch, I'll be very happy. Seriously, all that guy does is get traded mid-season and help teams: Winnipeg last year, Pittsburgh and Phoenix before that.

As I was saying, replace guys like Garbutt with cheap project players, and who's more of a project than a fast 23-year-old Czech on his third team in two seasons? He's also two-way/waiver-eligible, so if he doesn't work out between now and Leap Day, he can be sent to Rockford with no cap penalty or waiver risk. There was really no use for Garbutt, an older, lesser Shaw. I never wanted him here in the first place. Daniel Paille must be as washed up as a message in a bottle for them not to sign him out of camp and roll with Garbage Butt instead.

EDIT: speaking of Paille, the Rangers just signed him out of Rockford, where he'd been playing on an AHL contract and thus technically employed by Winnebago County. Good for him to get out of there, now at worst he'll have to live in Hartford instead. Good player.

Another bonus...Garbutt's $900k is off the books for next season.

More or less: young European winger who can't seem to put it together consistently. Panik seems to be more a victim of circumstance than pure washout, though; I think he got kicked to the Marlies because of however the Leafs are managing their contracts this year, I dunno. Sekac has struggled this year, but so has pretty much everyone on the Ducks.

I remember Sekac having me on alert in the third round and generally hearing a lot about him in Anaheim's first and second rounds, so the Bowmans must have seen something in him that they can mold. Worst-case scenario, he's another Skille or Stalberg where he gets down the ice and makes sweet moves and then forgets what to do next or runs out of space, then defects or gets non-tendered at the end of the year if he's not sent to Rockford sooner. Still, intriguing potential, I'll take it over whatever Ryan Garbutt did here, which other than that goal he scored last week I don't even remember.

I don't understand the trade one bit from Anaheim's perspective. Part of their undoing has arguably been all the tinkering Bob Murray has done to a roster that won 11 games last playoff. Whatever little Sekac has done, Ryan Garbutt will do less.

Yep...pretty amazing that Stan pulled it off. Even if Sekac is terrible, this is a good move for the Hawks. There are plenty of guys in Rockford that could give what Garbutt gave to this team.

Yeah I don't get it either.

God bless the Ducks

Ducks fans are really upset about this because the one time the Stars made the playoffs during the Obama administration, Garbutt went around trying to injure everyone. Of course, it's the Ducks, so I'm sure they'll take to him just fine.
