The Chicago Blackhawks announced today that they have acquired forward Jiri Sekac (SEH-katch) from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for forward Ryan Garbutt.

Sekac, 23, has posted three points (1G, 2A) in 22 games with Anaheim this season, his second in the National Hockey League. The Kladno, Czech Republic, native also appeared in the 2015 NHL All-Star Skills Competition. He split the 2014-15 campaign with the Ducks and Montreal Canadiens, collecting 14 assists, 23 points and 22 penalty minutes in 69 regular-season contests; he also appeared in seven 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs games with Anaheim. Originally signed as a free agent by Montreal on July 1, 2014, he was traded to Anaheim on Feb. 24, 2015. He previously tallied 39 points (13G, 26A) in 109 regular-season games with the Kontinental Hockey League’s Lev Praha (2011-14), in addition to eight points (1G, 7A) in 24 postseason tilts.

Garbutt, 30, has collected six points (2G, 4A) and 94 hits in 43 games with Chicago this season, after being acquired from Dallas on July 10, 2015. The Winnipeg native has notched 76 points (32G, 44A) over 241 career games with Chicago and Dallas (2011-15).

(CBS) On Thursday morning, the Blackhawks traded the last remaining piece from last summer’s Patrick Sharp trade. Yes, the Ryan Garbutt era is over. What’s your favorite memory?

Garbutt is headed to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for 23-year old Jiri Sekac. In Sekac, the Hawks acquire a young left winger with some offensive upside. He’s an average skater, but comes with great shot. This season in Anaheim, he’s only registered three points in 22 games, spending most of his time on the offensively-challenged Ducks’ fourth line.

Salary cap-wise, Sekac’s cap hit is $925,000, compared to Garbutt’s $900,000, but Sekac, who is signed to a two-way deal, is a restricted free agent after next season. At worst, the Hawks could get some much needed cap relief for next season. At best, Sekac discovers his game in Chicago, and becomes another affordable, flexible winger.

You have to wonder what this deal means for Marko Dano’s immediate future with the team. This is the second left winger the Hawks have acquired this month. It would appear as if Dano is destined to spend the entire season in Rockford, which is a bit of a surprise. The Hawks used a similar plan with Teuvo Teravainen, and that worked out. We’ll see how it goes with Dano.

With this deal, the Blackhawks have $2,324,914 of cap space, according to GeneralFanager.com.

I'm pretty optimistic about Richard Panik. Project players get a bad rap, and often from me when it comes to guys like Viktor Stalberg, but if we're to round out a roster with cheap guys out of necessity, let it be with toolsy decent-upside guys like Panik and Rasmussen rather than bums like Bickell and Garbutt. Not quite the same, but if we can get Lee Stempniak out of Jersey for the home stretch, I'll be very happy. Seriously, all that guy does is get traded mid-season and help teams: Winnipeg last year, Pittsburgh and Phoenix before that.

I don't understand the trade one bit from Anaheim's perspective. Part of their undoing has arguably been all the tinkering Bob Murray has done to a roster that won 11 games last playoff. Whatever little Sekac has done, Ryan Garbutt will do less.
