When did he try to persuade anyone? He's issuing mandates like a king. There was no real public appeal. He offered rough guidelines to constituents and when they said "fuck you" he got angry like the rich brat he is and threw a temper tantrum. Guys like Pritzker aren't used to not getting their way and they don't like it.

Of course, now other governors are able to issue proclamations of their own. In fact, if they don't, they stand to look bad if this thing really does spread like wildfire.

Again. maybe this is the right thing to do. But I guarantee that Pritzker has not really examined it and weighed the odds, measured the risk/reward. If thousands of people start getting sick anyway, then he's just destroyed a bunch of people economically on top of the health crisis. He doesn't know. He gave some basic guidelines based upon what he was hearing and when The People chose not to follow them he threw a fit.

I don't want Donald Trump to be a dictator. And I don't want JB Pritzker to be one either.

Oh and by the way, people are shoulder to shoulder at O'Hare, in grocery stores, and tomorrow 80 years olds will be sitting in polling places all day while half the population of Chicago tramps through.

I'm in line with this take.

I hope someone takes that press conference during the next election and lets him know how untrustworthy he is in a time of crises.

If its that critical, declare martial law and shut it all down. No one needs to be scolded by someone like him

I think there is a lot of truth in here. I think it's all about playing the odds though.

We will know how bad this is within the next 2 weeks. We may know by the weekend. So, you are either the guy who was more afraid of stopping bar patrons from drinking in groups than you were about Coronavirus or you were the guy that shut things down for a week or two out of caution based on the advice of the medical community and you have to be judged on whether that was a choice that should have been made.

Schools at least for now are staying open because schools are more important than an NBA game.

Bump for WFR in reference to this:
WaitingforRuffcorn wrote:
The argument was never about the "importance" of the NBA vs. school. It was about the logic of closing one vs. not closing another. If you are banning all gathering of more than 250 people keeping the schools open seems like a poor choice. To prove it was a poor choice they chose to close them the next day.

If you are trying to stop a pandemic from spreading then you can't say well this large gathering is really "important" otherwise canceling other large gatherings is meaningless. Now shut the fuck up.
It was the correct decision to ultimately cancel schools too. I was explaining why both choices didn't happen at the same time. As I said, it was about the "importance" of the events being cancelled which was clearly something you didn't get.

You keep repeating this like it's some great point and gotcha moment, which it never was. You said something stupid, and now you keep lashing out to cover for it. You literally cited school lunches as the reason for keeping schools open. If feeding starving children is the criteria then schools should never close.

This is the level of delusion that is necessary to make Joe Biden seem coherent.

It wasn't some great point. I keep repeating it because days later you still don't understand it.

Yes, the decision to close schools was much harder than the one to close NBA games and school lunches are one of the major reasons why.

At least now, you do seem to understand the point I made, but you are simultaneously arguing it is obvious but I was also wrong to say it?

Sort of what he does. Feeding Children and the altering of child care responsibilities are two of the primary reasons for the hesitancy involved in ever closing schools.

There are always considerations made along those lines. It's why a disclaimer was issued which made it clear that food would be provided for children during each day that schools are closed.

Then why aren't malls and department store closed? Why isn't the library and gym closed? Why are Metra and CTA trains and buses still running? The odds seem to be just as great if not better to catch Corona at one of those places than at a bar.

That must be a new development then. When they made the announcement last week about the schools being closed, they said that libraries and park dist buildings would be open to accommodate kids.

Yup, you might as well shut everything. The bars and restaurant closures will modestly slow the spread, but there are still plenty of places where people are massing.

Jorr’s post above about JB is spot on. I guess the governor has to do something....not sure he even has the authority. I guess do it and ask questions later.

I'm with the schools being closed and the 1000 person gathering limit, but eveything, else I am not. We're going to blast the economy to the stone age.

I got an email on Thursday or Friday about the library up by me being closed.

Oddly enough, my kids' daycare is still open.

Our daycare is open as well, but we are keeping AJ home for at least this week.

This is either a huge power grab by the elite or they are not telling us the whole truth. either way we are slowly losing our Constitutional rights. Freedom of Assembly?Gone. Freedom to a speedy trail? Gone.
I honestly think Trump is trying to not give into the shadow government and go full on martial law/dictator. But the more I see how these governors are acting and how the leaks are coming out it seems to be a losing battle.
People will get sick, yes. Will people die, yes. But we can not nor should we give up more rights or give the govt more control that you know we will never get back. And there it is. He just called out the National Guard in NY. seizing property

Our Library is closed as well but they are apparently doing drive through service (ie you can order a book on line and pick it up through the drive through). I'm not sure how many facilities have that capability though.

New Jersey just enacted 8pm- 5am curfew. Also, all bars, restaurants, gyms, movie theaters etc closed in NY, Connecticuit and NJ.

We just locked the front door to our office. Telling all clients not to come in. Doing phone appointments. Later today I'm driving to a client's house to drop a check off rather than have him come in to pick it up. He has some serious health issues. Gonna do a dead drop at his house without any physical interaction.

Right, next is a curfew, then intrastate travel restrictions, then interstate travel restrictions. And everyone is just going to sit there and take it because they saw someone share a tweet thread from a doctor claiming there aren't any more ECMO machines in the state of Washington.

Our collective civil liberties, including the right to not have those liberties abridged without proper process, mean a whole hell of a lot more than grandma and grandpa. Thanks a lot, you fear-mongering turds, you've brought us to full on authoritarianism where the state can crush businesses at will and threaten citizens with arrest for trying to exercise free movement. Fuck you, this is your fault.
