worse than picking up a $500 tab is listening to my father in law spouting Trump propaganda while I'm trying to eat.

Current in-laws are really good about that.

My ex's family lived and breathed Fox News...to the point that it was the only thing any of them ever watched.

We split the dinner bills with my parents and hers. If you host a holiday, you take care of the dinner and everyone else helps out with booze and apps. Now that my parents are retired, my sister has decided that Mom and Dad don't pay when we all go out to eat. FUCK THAT! They have plenty of money...and if they're struggling for cash, they can sell the boats.

I have a bigger issue with each of our siblings expecting us to make every recital, baseball game, gymnastics, circus, water park, birthday party, block party, ski resort, family vacation, luau night, and be on call for baby sitting within an hour. Every weekend starting Memorial Day until the end of July is booked with other peoples kids shit or a previously mentioned event. I fucking hate it. All I want is one Saturday where its 80 degrees, the grass is cut, the mosquito's have yet to arrive, and I can drink beer, watch baseball, and grill meat...without having to leave at 1pm for some bullshit thing I won't remember in 5 years anyway.

Not as bad but I have a similar situation.

The latest is the grand, family wide trip to Ireland for a hootenanny with Irish people who are related but don't know the kids. Part of the plan for the planners is, of course, to pass the hat around to the kids so it is a free trip. But every kid isn't the same, so less is expected of the family with two six figure government jobs because...poor them. Fuck that noise.

My in-laws are pushing for the idea of a Christmas cruise with the family. This is a nightmare scenario on many levels for me...among them, I hate cruises, and the idea of being around my sisters in law and their husbands for any sort of extended period of time my make me homicidal.

Honestly Doug, now that you are fully settled into the house with the dogs and whatnot, THIS is the summer to start skipping some of those events so you can do your own thing at home once in a while. The hardest event to say "no" to attending is the first one you miss. After that it will become much easier, and the invites will start to dwindle.

the other thing that bothers me is that our siblings never seem to be able to come over when invited, except for holidays or when we have a party.

For example, we got a puppy in May...my sister's kids didn't meet her until December. Yet, I went to no less than eight 9U little league games in 6 weeks.

My wife isn't a fan of the family part of Christmas. She loves the friends part.
she's been pushing for us to "go to mexico" over the holidays and that's fine. but we still have to exchange gifts and do the whole thing before or after. We can't just "skip it" this year. Thankfully, the family trip is still a few years off. My sister wants to wait until the kids have a clear understanding of Santa.

I hear ya Frank, but I'm only 49% of the vote. :eye:

Yeah, that's another part of the issue I have with it that none of them other than my wife seem to understand...but all of their kids are fucking teenagers.

Compromise, with you two and the siblings. Instead of eight little league games, go to three. And after another game, "Hey Jerry. After the 10am baseball games, why don't you guys take a ride out here. I'll get a couple growlers of beer, throw some burgers on the grill, and the kids can run around in the yard with the dogs."

I love that idea, but the kid plays three games every weekend...

"Isaac has a baseball game." = "Sorry, we can't make it."

from my point of view that shit needed to be nipped in the bud from the get-go. I would NEVER go see somebody else's kid play sports unless it was like in the Rose Bowl and I was given free transportation.

I wish I were closer to my sister, but reading this thread kinda makes me glad I am not. She has turned SUPER religious and because I drink, curse, and don't attend church, she probably things I'm going to hell. Maybe she's right who the hell knows. Anyway....

My nephew has played soccer for three years. We have been invited to one game. With about a 15 hour notice. And we caught shit for not being able to make it because we had something or other going on. We are going to her house Saturday evening for his bday party, and it will be the first time I have been over to her house in nearly 3 years. I will say that when us or my parents host holidays/birthdays, she does bring plenty of food or snacks, or offers to bake dessert.

We had my parents and my aunt & uncle over last Saturday night just for a visit and dinner, and it never even crossed my mind to invite my sister.

Here's how I see this going...
"He doug, isaac has a game Saturday."
"Hm. Well, I can't make it."
"What why?"
"Well you see back in 2015 I killed this God's son, and of course he got pretty pissed off, so he came after us and neat destroyed Saturn in the process. Fortunately I was able to kill him too, and his concubines, and his daughters, but then a few years later his other estranged son came after us after resurrecting a bunch of his nephews. Well I kinda killed him too although you're never really sure, but now that god whose son we killed in 15 has this sister who is coming after us not to mention a black pyramid that's been affecting our minds and our ghost so really I got a lot to deal with right now."

Start cheering for the other team. Those invites will dry up.

I’d rather avoid going to my own kids sporting events (I do go without complaint), fuck going to a nephew’s basketball game or niece’s volleyball. And it’s not that I don’t want to see them compete I just wish there were no other parents there as they take it far to seriously. Sorry, little Jonny isn’t getting a d1 scholarship... he is slow and pretty average height.

I have an uncle who complains about being on a "fixed income"...I have good information that his fixed income is about $150k per year.

I wasn't a big sports kid but played (poorly) little league for MANY years. Neither of my parents saw me play ever, not once. I'd ride my bike or they'd drop me off and run errands while the game was on. I was, and am, totally fine with that. I don't need my parents to watch me play sports to make me feel loved.

And you know how we got that tree? Luck. Good Luck. Great Luck. The Best Luck. No work. No sacrifice. No solid decision making. No strategic plans of any sort. No because it's kind of the right thing to do even if it's difficult.

And this isn't mentioned once casually. NOOOOOOO we have to have to beat the horse well after expiration. Birthday. Dinner. Birthday. Special. Birthday. Fun. Sitting at the table with those shitheads for 2 hours and paying about $500 a time for it is like...well the worst experience ever. I think it's what having your balls ripped out thru your nose would feel like but I can't speak from experience. I'd almost prefer them demand we take them out to dinner 4 times a year and host 2 holidays, at least I could respect the honesty.

FUUUUUUUUUCKKKKK THAT! If I ever am in a position to take a husband again, damn sure he's going to be an orphan.

jesus, never heard someone bitch and moan so much about taking their elderly parents out for their birthday. The asshole in this story might not be your in laws.

not to mention the pinnacle grinds, Iron Banner, the Nightfalls, Nightmare Hunts, the Dungeon...

to be fair, the 9 YEAR OLD is really good. he's easily one of the best 5 kids in the league and has been at every age. all he wants to do is play baseball...all the fucking time. he may not be a 9 year old D1 prospect...(curve balls will sort that out), but if he wants to play in college at some level, I'd say his chances to do so are solid.

This is shaping up to be the 2020 Thread of the year.

My wife has no parents to complicate things. One brother... who is what I'd call a functional lunatic. Two cousins...that's it. Her small remaining family is a non-factor.

My family is....difficult. Dad and his wife are fine....Mom and Sister....they're complicated and my wife tries to stay completely away, which definitely puts me in an uncomfortable situation. I get it....I totally understand why she is uncomfortable around them, but I don't have that luxury.

Spaulding.....you have no choice but to just not go out to dinner with them.

Doug....your only option is to just say no, we have plans and pull back. The longer you wait, the more difficult it is. Enjoy your summer and live your own life.

I did 2 extended family vacations when my kids were younger. Got through them ok at the time, but would never do it again.

Like every other proposal for the family trip has involved renting a beach house or some shit like that for a week. I can get on board with that because I won't be trapped with them...can escape for a bit if needed. The cruise thing just doesn't work for me. Went on one once. Hated it.

I have a niece who is in the junior national program for soccer. Haven't seen one game.

I'll definitely jump on that bandwagon if she eventually makes the Olympics...not the trials though

You got me thinking about sports my sports a little. The way I got into football was that I was hanging around with friends on the day of the first practice. I didn't even know there was a team. It got close to practice and they said, just come out to hang out. I showed up and suddenly I was a football player. I didn't ask my parents and they didn't sign me up. They never came to a practice and occasionally came to games.

I don't think my parents EVER saw me play high school baseball. That would practically be child abuse today. I could understand the weekday stuff as it was always far away. There were a lot of times I'd play on weekends close by at Loyola or Gordon or Weber.

I completely get you. I would refuse to go on a cruise with my inlaws. But I would prob refuse a beach house too
