Two shows now come to mind that have done it right in re-booting themselves: "Cobra Kai" obviously.
Now, "Kids in the Hall".
This 8-episode "series" is a total return to form. the only thing they added to their quirky repertoire is their own...frontal nudity. which is a bit shocking...but also, a bit funny. not the best thing to lean on, which they don't...but they also don't lean on the past, just mailing in a cash grab to trend on social media.
With the audacious material, they do their due diligence of "diversity" to pay the lip service, and pave the way for the typical offbeat humor they mastered in the late-80's-to-mid-90's.
they do bring back some classic characters. i would've loved to see more gordon and gavin, and i hope cabbage head is in the cards if this is renewed.
but it's their commitment to the craft of their weird sketch approach that keeps it entertaining throughout.
some of it doesn't work, some of it barely works...but when it hits, it hits perfectly.
i wouldn't necessarily recommend it to people who are unfamiliar with them. if you are, then try to find the original series. or watch "Brain Candy" (which they also successfully reference).
It's refreshing to see stuff like this during Cancel Culture. And I guess it didn't make enough of a blip to the Twitter Mob to attack it. But it does have some really wild shit going on.
