I'd rather take my chances with Hanie. You know what you have in Griese, he is often injured and doesn't have a good arm. He has been on how many teams?, did not leave here on the best note, and has he ever been in a playoff game? You guys are insane. I'd rather have Losman, good example.

I'm not sure who is even STILL on the free agent market for veteran quarterbacks, and chances are, none of them are good. Caleb Hanie actually earned his roster spot when many thought the Bears were going to only carry 2 QBs last season. If Caleb becomes the Bears' equivalent of Jim Sorgi down in Indianapolis with Peyton Manning, so be it...

The backup QB question came up again tonight with Hub & Brian "The Whipping Boy". Needless to say, Hub is less than thrilled about the Bears going to training camp in Bourbonnais with very little experience at the most important position on the gridiron in the event Jay Cutler gets injured during the preseason. Hub reminded "Whip" tonight, Dan Hampton Saturday afternoon and all Bear fans what happened to the Bears in 2005 when Rex Grossman broke his ankle in the second preseason game in St. Louis that year on that awful FieldTurf. Once Rex got hurt, the options were Chad Hutchinson (remember him, Bear fans?) and a fourth round draft pick at the time who went 10-5 in his rookie season as basically nothing more than a caretaker of the offense, Kyle Orton...The same Orton who shaved his facial hair and now sports #8 with the Broncos...

This is starting to get out of hand.

Put them in whatever order you want, but the fact of the matter is having Hanie and Griese on the roster makes the Bears better than just having Hanie and Basanez.

And enough with the "you know what you get argument." Thats precisely why you want Griese, so you KNOW you have a guy who can step in and lead the team, like he did against the Bears last year. While Hanie MIGHT be the next big thing, what if he isn't? I'd rather have a game manager who we KNOW can handle it step in, rather than the complete unknown that is Basanez.

There is (allegedly) some bad blood between Ron Turner and Griese ... going back to the comeback against the Eagles a couple of years ago when Griese drove them down the field for the win and then claimed that he called all the plays. Stupid sh**, but sometimes that stuff lingers.

However, Orton really pimped Griese as being a big factor in his development as a quarterback.

Wasn't there bad blood between Turner and Cutler stemming from the recruitment process? If it's just minor wounds, they will heal.

Back to Hub Arkush for just a moment...He's not necessarily sold on Caleb Hanie as a #2, and doubts seriously that Brett Basanez will ever make it in the NFL. Basanez, if memory serves, was brought in last March as strictly a third QB during OTAs in Lake Forest...
