That's an average QB in the NFL.

It disappointments me that he's not more accurate on the short throws all the time. He made some good throws but he missed a few guys again. If he could fix that he has got a chance to do well. I still would love to see what he would be like with both Eddie Royal and Brandon Marshall.

I don't know what that means. Cutler moves his feet more than Orton.

The difference is that Cutler is better at throwing the football and can get away better with falling backwards while throwing the ball.

It means Orton looks like he's stumbling and out of control the second the ball is snapped. His pocket prescence is weird. It seems like he feels the pressure but has no way to avoid it. No smoothness to his delivery or anything really.

196 yards with no TD's is average in the NFL for a full game?

I didn't say it was an average game. I said he's an average QB. Not good, not terrible.

On Basanez' two completions he held in the pocket and had some nice throws (to wide open receivers).

I wonder if Nas thinks there may be a QB issue in Chicago.

Well, that's almost exactly what I had said. Not good football, but not bad football.

Orton will not end the season as the starter.

Cornerback had deep contain to the outside. Because of that, the route had to clown to the middle of the field, and the underneath man becomes the primary receiver. Even that's kind of deceptive, because if the cornerback kept deep outside contain then the instruction is not actually to check down, but to throw the damn ball away. It's basically a one-read route for both receiver and "QB". He was fine there.

WRs are explicitly told on gimmick plays such as that to just run the route. They're not supposed to break it off or run scramble drills or anything like that. Coaches don't want the RB having to make decisions as to where to go with the ball. Hester is supposed to hit the back corner of the end zone if it is vacated, and if not, the play is dead.

I watched it a few times, I'm think you're giving Hester too much credit. It's possible he read the play but it's just as possible he gave up on the route.

Collinsworth said Cutler was doing a three way with Olsen and his wife.

I agree 100%. I was a little confused last night when Collinsworth was talking about McDaniels wanting to bring his Patriot system over to Denver and that it was a ball control offense that didn't rely on the stretching the defense out and that is why Orton will do just fine.

Unless I am mistaken, the ability for Brady to stretch the defense out is what makes New England's offense very dangerous. People are worried about Moss deep and it opens up a ton of options for Welker etc underneath.

I think Kyle's inability to throw an accurate 20 yard+pass is exactly why he won't be the starter there at the end of the year. He'll have a ton of 12/16 97 yard line type halves which will lead to a lot of fields goals etc.

The more I think about it, the dumber the Broncos look.

Orton is a free agent after this season. If he's even serviceable there he's going to bolt for another team without the drama around it. If he's bad, then he's gone anyways and the team has no viable other option besides drafting a rookie with a likely high draft pick. If he's good, he's still a free agent and if I was Orton I'd want to be overpaid greatly for dealing with the situation in Denver.

The Broncos should have given Orton an extension as soon as the trade happened. It wouldn't have been that expensive and they could have avoided the situation that pretty much whatever happens they lose any competent QB next year or put all there hopes on Kyle Orton who isn't a long term solution.

thanks for saving me the two seconds of research.

i would venture to guess he'll be the QB by about week 6.

I don't see any reason to believe Chris Simms is even a capable NFL QB.

3 years of nothing is a long time for a QB who wasn't very good prior to that.

There are several good looking QBs in next year's draft. Orton being Orton will ensure that they are in position to get one of them.

Even though Orlando Pace had a devil of a time trying to protect Jay Cutler's blindside last night, I thought Cutler overcame the vicious boos from the INVESCO Field crowd very nicely in the first half that he played in what's supposed to be the most important of the preseason games. I thought head coach Lovie Smith did the smart thing in yanking Cutler & Matt Forte for the second half, and I wouldn't be shocked if Caleb Hanie gets the start in Thursday's preseason finale vs. the Kevin James-looking Eric Mangini and a Browns' team you'd think would have its own QB squared away with Brady Quinn starting...

Maybe they will offer the Bears Orton, 2 firsts, and a third pick. I hope Jerry doesn't go for it.

dolphin, Denver traded their 2010 first round selection to the Seahawks for their second round pick (37th overall). The only first round they have next year is the one the Bears get. I'm hoping it is the 32nd.

This is a strange post.

My point was how they have put themselves in a bad position because even if Orton is good this year or even equal to what he was last year, he'll bolt to another better situation and if he's bad then he'll be gone and they have no backup plan. I would have given Orton an extension to avoid this situation.

It has nothing to do with what the Bears gave up to get Cutler which was significant and may end up being costly especially if Cutler does not become the top five QB he has the potential to be.

I had never seen Josh McDaniels interviewed before last night. At first glance, he seems like a total dipshit who is completely devoid of presence.

I seem to remember them using the Bears first rounder in a trade for some DB from Wake Forrest (Alphonso Smith?) so that all the pieces of this trade are all known quantities.
