And here's the thing: Cutler hasn't played in a long time now. There's no margin for error, so how do you take the ball from a hot hand and place it in the hands of a guy who hasn't taken a snap in over a month? I was sort of hoping we'd tank and get a pick, but that's out now, and you might as well try to make a run. How clear is it that Cutler is our best chance at a run? Not very clear, at this point.
A HOT HAND?!?! ok let's leave tonight out of it and check these standard scoring fantasy football point totals for 5 games.
1. 15.46, 20.88, 12.54, 19.48, 22.20 = 18.11avg
2. 18.28, 20.58, 11.46, 20.58, 23.02 = 18.78avg
who is QB #1 and who is QB #2?
QB #1 = mccown and QB #2 = cutler, who also has a 20.48 point game in there. so yeah mccown went HAM and got 39.58 points on 27/46 for 348yds 4TD and 1 rushing TD (keep in mind that rushing TDs = 6pts to a throwing TD = 4 so that added to the 39.58) so yeah.... i hear you matt.... yes mccown made some nice throws tonight that you singled out, but quite honestly i found his deep throws to alshon last week more impressive.... and remember that alshon had 200+yds with 2TDs against the vikings.... AND MCCOWN LOST.
you can't take away the fact that mccown wasn't enough to will the bears past the just-under-.500ish rams and the then 2-8 vikings.... mccown lost two horrible games against tomato can teams.... when the shit hits the fan and doesn't go perfectly like it did tonight (in that the offense didn't have to punt, it was therefore "perfect" in some capacity) you're going to have a choice of mccown vs cutler.... and like, dude, matt.... i love ya bro but have you noticed that, example, mccown can't throw on the run? mccown can't escape a collapsing pocket to save his life?
are you gonna tell me that if jay cutler was out there tonight he couldn't/wouldn't have made those throws and the bears don't win by 2+ possessions tonight? jay can do everything that mccown has done over the last few weeks, but he can do more.... and most importantly, his physical attributes and skills are more condusive to saving your ass in a game where everything isn't going according to plan and it's a fucking game of smear the queer out there and surprise cutler's got a man-bag and a kid named camden OH NO SMEAR HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so yeah dude, i lvoe what josh mccown has done for the bears. he's stepped in and steadied the ship and literally provided THE EXACT SAME OUTPUT AS JAY CUTLER.... yes his TD/INT ratio is superior to jay's, however.... pro-football-ref counts the washington game as a loss for jay, but that was mccown's game IMO (he was quarterbacking with the lead in the 2nd half, the bears DEF blew it but mccown was the quarterback of consequence) so jay's 4-3....and you know what, that detroit loss was weird in that he was rushed out there and clearly not 100% and even tho he takes the loss, man, he had them within one possession/2pt of tying it, which mccown came and got, albeit without the 2pt... so in games where jay is healthy and starting normally he's 4-2 this season....but we'll say 4-3.
which means that mccown just improved from 2-3 to 3-3 tonight. the bears are a 7-6 team. cutler lost a 40-32 game to detroit (24/47 for 317 with 2TD/3INT) and he lost to new orleans (24/33 for 358yds 2TD/0INT) and then gimpy cutler lost to detroit (21/40 250 1TD/1INT) --- mccown's losses? washington (14/20 201yds 1TD) the fucking rams (36/47 for 351 2TD/1INT) and..... the vikings (23/36 355 2TD... and of course like ~220/2TD were to alshon) and i'm pointing out these rams and vikings losses because not only did they lose, but they lost 42-21 to the rams, and they only put up 20pts against the vikings... in jay's losses yeah, 18 against the saints (but remember they were playing a time of possession game so they only scored 26, within one possession) 32 against the lions (again, a 1poss/2pt game) and then against the lions the second time they were again within a TD/2PT of tying it....
so basically, mccown is the only QB on the bears who got blown the fuck out this year.... and i mean, yeah, he lost to the fucking vikings..... i honestly believe if mccown's out there against DET or if cutler is at full strength they win that 2nd lions game.... and i don't have any excuses for the vikings game.... so what i'm getting at is that jay has a better resume at 4-2.5 (i'm absolving him 1/2 of a loss because of injury in the 2nd DET game... he played like a fucking warrior out there, hearkening back to that one lions game ~3 years ago where it was a smear the queer game and he gutted out a 27-20 type win @ ford field... and just... man, seriously, i'm filling up paragraph after paragraph of blabber but am i the only person here who watches the games and sees mccown as a great system QB however he's got physical limitations that could seriously fuck the bears over in teh playoffs?
cuz yeah, man, if everything goes right and the offense is rolling like it doesnt have to punt all game long, then yeah mccown can be front-running out there and get you 300+yds adn whatnot... look at how wide open marshall and alshon are getting.... if you throw joe haden at one the other one can go off.... that and the trestman factor are why the bears offense is beasting... i'm telling you man mccown only has tonight's game throwing off the scale and that's because he just happened to have 5TD (4 passing) with #s that fit in with all of the other games he's had, which the fantasy point breakdown up there shows you is the same exact output as jay cutler.
so seriously, if both of these quarterbacks are playing at the same level out there.... i'm gonna roll with the quarterback who has upside to turn it up another notch or two and most importantly against better defenses. jay has a better arm, he can throw on the run, and oh yeah he can run and turn broken plays into 10+ yard scampers, which he does 1-2 times a game without fail. the mccown story is great and i hope to god the bears can retain him as a backup but i can't fault the guy if someone offers him a 2yr/10mil deal to go start in jacksonville or houston or something.... but seriously man, i think this is more of a testament to the trestman offense that two guys have put up virtually identical #s in the same # of games (they've each had 6 full games, basically) with the exception of tonight's touchdown orgy.
it's not like you're pulling mccown to put in RG3 or something.... you're bringing in a guy who by all accounts was having a "meh" year and still had the exact same raw statistical production as mccown.... so really, who has the upside to step up and lead this team through the playoffs and into a super bowl? honestly can you see josh mccown picking apart seattle? just wait til those LARGE. ANGRY. BLACK. STUDS. GET. TO. WANGWHIPPING. YOU. and then you've got richard sherman and pals out there applying tight coverage to marshall/alshon/unicorn and you're gonna need the QB to deliver tight accruate spirals thrown while he's running from a pass rush..... josh mccown can't throw on the run, and he can't escape any pressure in the pocket.... and jay cutler can do all of that stuff,
and that's why you need him to get to 100% and come out here and risk not being the "hot hand" cuz you gotta heat this motherfucker up cuz i guarantee you that YOU MAKE A RUN TO/THROUGH THE SUPER BOWL WITH JOSH MCCOWN AS YOUR QUARTERBACK. i'm sorry, this team has no defense and therefore you have to maximize your offense and even tho this offense is as good as any offense we've seen in chicago since the long lost mythical year of 1995, aka the offensive standard in modern bears football......and thus, man, if trestman/marshall/alshon/o-line are good enough to where you can insert mccown and get the same production as cutler, man, just imagine if cutler could get some rhythm established and if he gets a hot hand..... seriously dude, with no defense you can win the super bowl. remember the colts had the 32nd ranked rush defense when they beat the bears in the super bowl in the 2006 season?
they did it because they had peyton manning. and well because the bears couldn't stop the rush and rex threw a horrible pick late... but still in the end that team had no run defense and were up against a team that could run the ball and rah rah rah, but when it came down to a scrum and it was a 1-2 possession game late, the team with the better quarterback won.
i'm not saying that jay cutler is an elite quarterback right now, but he's definitely a franchise QB right now..... and with trestman here I AM NOT GOING TO GIVE UP ON CUTLER BECAUSE GODDAMMIT I WANNA SEE CUTLER PLAYING AT THE LEVEL MCCOWN IS PLAYING AT RIGHT NOW cuz i think this offensive success is largely a byproduct of trestman constantly improving his craft and getting better @ calling plays, combine that with the o-line jelling and keeping the QB upright and allowing some solid running..... yeah man. fuck. cutler's supposed to be out there lighting it up right now, and just imagine man if you could FINALLY unlock the full skillset of jay cutler and get it at optimum efficency.... dude that's the only way you can win the super bowl this year. and don't you listen to dan bernstein? WINNING. CHAMPIONSHIPS. IS. ALL. THAT. MATTERS. HOW. DOES. BENCHING. CUTLER. GET. YOU. CLOSER. TO. A. CHAMPIONSHIP?!?!!?
fuck it man, i'm on fire tonight. imma pour another nog and call up les tonight. this has to be said!
