Or the team should just put in the contract that they will not go after game checks if he's suspended for illegal hits.

Doesn't the league take the game check when suspended? I did not think you could get into a contract that they could not. Or is he saying that if he does not hit some bonuses etc due to suspension they should not penalize him?

All the more reason the team shouldn't be fighting this.

Perhaps. It certainly is a pointless distraction for Nagy, who doesn't need this in his 1st camp.

I don't disagree. Hopefully it's done before Thursday.

This is why the holdout doesn't make sense. This is a league rule. Nothing the Bears should be able to change or get around.

The language was put in the contract of Barkley and Gurley. If it's not a big deal I don't understand why the Bears wouldn't put the language in the contract.

If he's a great player for the Bears, the Bears will pay his fines(joking). The only way they would come after his $$ if he's a bum who is always suspended. Seems this kid lacks confidence....but funny to see the football dope FavreFan jackoff to his stunt like he (Smith ) is coming off as some confident bad ass.

Also plenty of players drafted before Smith that didn't get the language. What makes him special?

It seems like this is another NFL rules fuck-up. People are not clear on the rules, so it's creating problems for the teams. Goodell has overseen a series of poorly rolled out rules changes.

Maybe they didn't ask. This is the best time to request the language. Truthfully we're talking about less than $100k at worst. That's nothing to the Bears and it will allow their 1st round pick to play freely.

I am not sure what part it plays but Bernsie and Rozner are going over some obscure facts from (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky's contract. Basically don't do anything bad to Bears or they can try to go after your guaranteed money.

100K is also nothing to him once he signs his contract, so he should probably just report to camp. If the Bears didn't give any special language to Mitch, (who is now the franchise for better or worse) maybe they don't want to give it to a middling linebacker and create animosity?

Anyone who knows football knows this kid is a player. That probably explains why you're one of the only posters here who disliked the pick.

It's still funny to me how dumb the Bears are on this holdout though. Give the kid what he wants and get him in camp.

He seems like the safest pick, and the type of player that will instantly become a star. And the Bears can't sign him. It's been a rough ride post Lovie.

ILB = Non-Premium position. You win superbowls because of great quarterback play. You win superbowls because of playmakers on offense and beast edge rushers. You don't win superbowls because of inside linebackers. It's a grunt position.

I was coming around on the kid before the holdout though. Now this? Disaster. He won't beat out Nick PolishLastName for the starting job.

Really bad football thoughts by Caller Bob.

Very true. Both sides lose in this kind of conflict. Seems like a silly issue and kind of chicken shit by the Bears.

Do established vets like Hicks have this clause in their deal? This seems like something a vet should lobby for, at least before a rookie.

Gurley's representatives had the foresight to get it included. It wasn't an issue with Hicks. Blaming Smith for the incompetence of others is silly. I'm confident that you wouldn't fight this if you were a member of the Bears management team.

I'd think the NFL would discourage or prohibit teams from guaranteeing financial immunity to players for illegal hits and resulting suspensions. That kind of removes the deterrence.

If I'm reading this right it isn't immunity from fines from the NFL. It's to protect the player from the team taking away guarantees because of ever evolving shitty NFL rules.

Yeah, I know -- I'm just saying the NFL can't be happy with teams offering to soften the blow for behavior that the NFL deems excessively dangerous.
