Do established vets like Hicks have this clause in their deal? This seems like something a vet should lobby for, at least before a rookie.

Gurley's representatives had the foresight to get it included. It wasn't an issue with Hicks. Blaming Smith for the incompetence of others is silly. I'm confident that you wouldn't fight this if you were a member of the Bears management team.

I'd think the NFL would discourage or prohibit teams from guaranteeing financial immunity to players for illegal hits and resulting suspensions. That kind of removes the deterrence.

If I'm reading this right it isn't immunity from fines from the NFL. It's to protect the player from the team taking away guarantees because of ever evolving shitty NFL rules.
