It seems steep, but I guess you couldn’t have waited until the guy got to FA. It’s an obvious need and he’s a good player.

Same comment on giving Johnson money - gotta spend it somewhere, may as well do it on competent players. They’re far away from having a bad contract impact roster decisions, especially once they hit reset on the QB position.

He's also a 4-3 DE. What if your new coach wants to run a 3-4, you are basically marrying a player to whatever coach you bring in.

I'm assuming the Bears have an off the record deal already worked out to sign him to a new contract?

Otherwise, your giving up a top 40 pick for a player that could walk away. Also hurting your chance at staying close to the #1 pick, if he's good enough to help win a few games.

Of course, it's the Bears, so he probably will walk, and get them a few wins, and they lose their second round pick....

Maybe this is Poles tipping his hand on the coaching decision.

The Bears have a 4-3 roster. I don't think you are going to switch to 3-4 unless Poles gets fired. I don't see Poles losing his job. The Bears biggest issue on defense has clearly been pressuring the quarterback. It was embarrassing to watch Sunday night.

I wish he'd show the restraint with draft picks that he does with free agent money.

27 and yet to produce a double digit sack season while playing on a loaded defensive line. Maybe he flourishes with less competition for sacks. He plays the run well.

A second seems stiff but we didn't get a star using our second on a dl in this draft

So does this mean that the Bears are going to trade Johnson for a second rounder? LOL

seems like an Adewale Ogunleye comp, where he is good, but we overrate his play

Sweat has as many sacks this season as the Bears do.

Caller Bob has been pissing and moaning about the Bears front 4 the past umpteen weeks. Poles goes out and improves the front 4 with a legit edge rusher, and Caller Bob is pissing and moaning about it.

Bob, relegate yourself to this thread from here on out; viewtopic.php?f=181&t=130389

He was the safer pick between him and Young. I think Young is a better player but he's almost never healthy

Supposedly Young's knee and hip are in awful shape.

If you recall the last time the Bears traded a 2nd rounder for a young DLineman in season, he promptly died

so give up the early second so we can get him in the building for half a season... make sure he's still comfortable playing for a loser franchise then offer him a giant bag of money in FA?

why didnt they just sign him as a FA. i dont get it, especially after last years second was wasted

Then lets hope Poles trades a second rounder for Caller Bob.

Who was the last great edge rusher the Bears drafted. ESPN asked the question and I can't think of one.

Richard Dent?

Maybe Trace Armstrong, though I don't think of him as great

Sweat is instantly the best defensive lineman on the team. It was embarrassing to watch the Bears DE's get bitch slapped around by the Chargers OT's and TE's, you have a guy that can rush the passer and is solid in the run game, #91 is purely a pass rush specialist, he is a liability against the run and that is the reason he is available every year.

Giving up a pick at the top of the second round is idiotic given the glaring needs on this roster, you have plenty of cap room next year and could have bought a similar or better guy and kept your draft capital. Seems that Poles must be feeling a bit of heat applied to his backside as this move makes no sense for a team that should be selling rather than buying.

Armchair psychologist here…I think Poles lacks confidence in his ability to sign FAs and wanted a head start on negotiating with the guy.

#91 doesn't really rush the passer either

Chase Young cost a whole 2 rounds of the draft less, was 3 years younger, overall just better, and currently having the best season of his career

I'm with you on this. I would have preferred to gamble a 3rd on a broken Chase Young.

Sweat was a topb10 DE last year. I imagine he's been better this year.
