Sometimes I wonder if he knows what he's doing. Moving Hester to receiver was a horrible mistake. Playing prevent against the Falcons cost them the playoffs. Also he seems to have a loyalty to his guys whether they are good coaches or not (and to Archuleta). Not to mention that he never gives straight answers at press conferences. He also said, "Rex is our guy" repeatedly even though Orton is taller and won more games (I know it's silly but true). His allegiance to the Cover 2 when the secondary stinks is also unnerving. His lack of real training camp bothers me and he seems so confident that the Bears can win the Super Bowl in the years the team has holes at every position.

Although it's a separate issue, I think the team lacks the depth of quality backup players at most positions (i.e. wide receiver, running back, quarterback, the secondary and maybe even defensive line). I'm also not sure who to blame for the bad draft picks and the resigning of Tommy Harris and Urlacher (he had neck surgery and he gets an extension???). It's probably Angelo, but sometimes you don't know how much influence the coach has on player personal decisions.

Timeout with 2 seconds left in the SEA game sealed it for me.

I wouldn't say he's a bad coach as much as he is part of a bad coaching staff.

I'd put him solidly in the middle third of NFL coaches.

I agree.

If the team is successful this season, it will have everything to do with the players on the field as opposed to the changes in coaching.

He's certainly not bad, but he sure-as-shit is nothing special either; essentially middle-of-the-road, as the consensus seems to state,

Yeah, the Super Bowl is full of "middle of the road coaches. Since Lovie started coaching the Bears, they have been very respectful.

Lovie Smith enters his sixth season as the head coach of the Chicago Bears with a regular season coaching record of 45-35 (.563). Smith’s 45 wins are third most in franchise history, trailing only Hall of Famers George Halas and Mike Ditka. Forty of those 45 regular season wins have come over the previous four seasons, tied for second most in the NFC and sixth most in the NFL during that span. Smith also has a 2-2 postseason record, including an NFC Championship and the Bears first Super Bowl appearance in 21 years (2006), to give him the third-most playoff victories in team history behind the six of Halas and Ditka

That's kind of like saying "Everett Scott is third in MLB history in most consecutive games played (1,307) ---- behind Gehrig (2,130) and Ripken (2,632).

(in other words, whooptie-freakin-doo) :)

You mean the guy who looks like Kurtwood Smith, "Red" from "That '70s Show" and the voice of the White Sox 2005 "Grinder" commercials? :?

not that i take your posts seriously jimmy but that clearly speaks to the lack of quality bears coaches more than it does lovie's abilities. But just ask irish any and you'll learn coaching rarely matters in football

I think coaching matters- just not in the ways people think it matters.

For the record, I think Lovie is probably solidly above average, but not spectacular. That's fine.

Question: If Tony Dungy was coaching the Bears in the Super Bowl and Lovie was coaching the Colts who wins?

Smith blows. You give him too much credit for the success of this team.

As a head coach, I just hope Lovie is a good defensive coordinator.

All I can say about Lovie is he got to the Super Bowl with Rex Grossman at Quarterback and because he stuck with Rex and didn't give in to media and fan pressure.

Peyton Manning was winnining that Super Bowl, no if ands or butts about it.

Irish Boy don't confuse the Lovie haters who still hang onto their gay love of Mike Ditka who if he was really a great head coach would have won more than one super bowl.

The idiots lose all credibilty because 99 percent of it is talk about how he lacks the fire and the passion.

Love is a bad coach, he picked his staff, he can't manage the clock and he has a low footbal IQ. Plus he is a cocky bastard to boot. Maybe if we lose our first 6 in a row they'll fire his ass.

All I want to know is how in the hell does a head coach who never ever talks or interacts with players or coaches on the sidelines during a game, actually manage a game? Can it be a coincidence that every time Lovie is on camera, he is watching the replay on the jumbo tron looking like a dufus? The Bears coordinators call the game...and Lovie listens to what they are calling. Just once I want to see Lovie at least look like he is a leader who is in charge of his team, rather than looking like just some dope with headphones on.
Was Lovie even calling the Defense plays tonight? Did anyone notice?

All the idiots are out in force this morning after 1 game.

At least VegasCubsfan admits to not being a Bears fan. Is rooting for the Bears to lose their first 6 games.

And Scorehead admitted in another thread to rooting more for the 49ers because their head coach has the fire and the passion.

Glad the kids are being spared the beatings while you post.

Hey Cubbygirl, i have been a Bears fan for 37 years. Iam bashing Lovie cause iam a fan who knows football. Iam ripping him cause he deserves it. Can you list his strong points as a coach?? There aren't many.

The kind of people that hate Lovie because he doesn't have the fire and passion would beat their kids. Lack of fire and passion is double speak for the real reason they don't like Lovie and we all know what it is.

How did Rex Grossman do this weekend?
