REPORT: Kansas City Chiefs Could Hire Emergency Coach For Playoffs After Patrick Mahomes’ Comments
The Kansas City Chiefs reportedly have another way to jumpstart their offense for the playoffs besides adding free agency help at pass-catching or offensive lineman positions. The Chiefs have a couple of starting offensive linemen banged up following their loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Christmas Day.
The Chiefs’ offensive struggles at wide receiver have been well-documented this season. The Chiefs lead the league in dropped passes with 26 dropped balls in 2023. Some Chiefs fans blame Matt Nagy for the offensive problems.
Nagy was the Chiefs offensive coordinator in 2016-17 before he left for the Chicago Bears head coaching job in 2018. He stayed there until he was fired following the 2021 season. Nagy coached the Chiefs quarterbacks in 2022.
He reclaimed the offensive coordinator gig after Eric Bieniemy left to take the Washington Commanders job this past offseason in hopes of improving his resume so he could find a head coaching job. The Commanders are on the brink of firing head coach Ron Rivera after Week 18. (The Commanders’ woes this season are not on Bieniemy.)
The Kansas City Chiefs could hire Bieniemy for the playoffs
Mike Florio with NBC Sports thinks the Chiefs could make a literal splash hire for the playoffs by adding Bieniemy once he’s been relieved of his offensive coordinator duties in Washington. Patrick Mahomes has hinted recently he misses his former offensive coordinator:
“First, the Commanders would have to fire Bieniemy. If/when they move on from coach Ron Rivera, the Commanders could choose to hold other members of the staff in place, until the next coach decides whether to keep him. If that doesn’t happen, and if Bieniemy is relieved of his duties, he’d be free and clear to join any other team for the playoff run.
Why not return to the Chiefs? Quarterback Patrick Mahomes recently explained that Bieniemy brought an accountability that the team is missing. “I think Coach Bieniemy set that standard when he was here,” Mahomes said.”
At this point, the Chiefs need to consider hiring Bieniemy if he’s available for the playoffs. They have nothing to lose by bringing back a key staff member from their previous two Super Bowl wins. They do have a lot to lose by sticking with Nagy when it’s clear the offense isn’t improving with a couple of weeks left in the regular season
The Chiefs will face tough defenses in the AFC this January. The Ravens, who lead the AFC standings heading into Week 17, just forced an NFL MVP candidate into throwing four interceptions on Monday Night Football. Bieniemy might be head coach Andy Reid’s real gimmick that could save their season instead of hoping a series of miracle plays can do the trick.
But will the Commanders play ball?
