3. Paul Konerko, -1.0
SHSTC Index: 50
He is 37, after all. But another consideration for the SHSTC is that WAR hasn't gotten along with Konerko for years. Something about a fence line and city permits, maybe? Seems complicated. But they hate each other. Konerko has 429 career homers and a career .358 OBP.
His career WAR is 29 -- Mike Trout is halfway there, by the way -- which puts Konerko in the vicinity of Melvin Mora and Alex Rios. Good players, but not exactly perennial All-Stars. Other than a couple of outliers, the typical season for Konerko is about two wins. Add that to his advancing age, and maybe we should have seen this coming.

That funny glove they have to use probably has something to do with it.

Seriously though, the worst first baseman in the league hits 20 homeruns and knocks in 75

Its a lot higher offensive bar than SS, 2B etc

Yeah, that's because its the easiest position to play...you could stick anyone there.

Konerko is killed in WAR due to his horrendous fielding and baserunning stats. Funny his best hitting years were when he was 34 and 35 years old. You usually don't see that kind of thing anymore.

Not really

Even his oWAR numbers have never been great.

so, what you're saying is that 45 offensive WAR is not hurt by -18 defensive and baserunning WAR?

Well, yeah. he had like 3-4 good years. 7 average ones, 2-3 horrible ones. People only remember the good ones. Most overrated player in Sox history.

BTW those are runs created numbers cited above, used to calculate WAR.

I find it very hard to believe there are 5 players worse than De Aza.
