The Cardinals are calling up top prospect Masyn Winn, the team announced Thursday. The shortstop is expected to arrive in St. Louis for Friday’s game against the New York Mets, as first reported by The Athletic. Here’s what you need to know:
Winn, 21, entered play Thursday hitting .283 with a .821 OPS in 104 games for Triple-A Memphis.
He connected on his 18th homer of the season in the Redbirds’ 6-2 win over Norfolk.
Winn entered the season ranked as the No. 46 prospect in baseball, per The Athletic’s Keith Law.
Lars Nootbaar was placed on the 10-day injured list (lower abdomen contusion) as the corresponding move.
https://theathletic.com/4786381/2023/08/17/cardinals-calling-up-masyn-winn/Hit 50 Balanced stance with a quiet setup and moderate load and leg kick; Above-average bat speed, can get overly aggressive in the approach, needs to improve pitch recognition, will get out front on breaking stuff; shows the ability to make hard contact, currently raw hitter but tool will play average with experience.
Power 40 Makes up for lack of size and physical strength with a quick stroke, mild leverage in the swing, will sell out for power in hitters counts and pull the occasional mistake over the fence but future in-game pop will be doubles type.
Baserunning/Speed 70 Double-plus raw foot speed, quick out of the box, will be a base stealing threat with more experience; aggressive base runner.
Glove 60 Glove is still raw but Winn has the physical tools for it to play plus in the future; Shows good instincts and a quick first step, soft hand and a lightening quick transfer; will be able to stick up the middle.
Arm 80 Unrivaled, elite arm strength, a weapon defensively; accurate and able to make any throw in the infield.
OverallAn exceptional athlete, Winn was drafted as a potential two-way player but has yet to take the mound professionally. The Cardinals reportedly plan on letting him find his comfort zone as a positional player before easing him into a pitching role. The speed and defense give a high floor and with expected hit tool development he profiles as a future everyday shortstop.

https://youtu.be/e9EyYJLlPRAhttps://youtu.be/blOCOKbk3bEThis kid is wiry, fast-twitch guy with a rocket arm, and is a 4.5-tool player. He's not as exciting as an Elly de la Cruz, but he may have the better career; "Blaze" Wynn has a legit shot to stay at SS. He threw 98.5 Mph off a mound in high school, i can't wait for a blowout and he zings a couple bullets at 98 over a guys head.
