Pretty thick in dialog early on, fairly fast paced and amusing on many levels. I enjoyed the movie immensely.

Curiously I watched Animal House with my son Max (for his first time). Much like Flounder and Pinto wouldn't be accepted, they were welcomed with open arms by the Delta House. Oddly in the middle of the movie Animal House features Tim Mathison whistling part of Peter and the Wolf while he's in the middle of the 'dead girl scam'. In the middle of this movie there's also some very popular musical number - I can't put my finger on where it's from though. Hell, maybe Peter and the Wolf or Fantasia.

But this movie is nothing like Animal House - but parallels can be drawn as to what extremes people will go to 'to be accepted'.

This movie is about starting up a company from scratch, in fantastic fashion.

There's some pretty funny scenes in the college classroom, and also one with 'Bill Gates'.

The funny thing is even for his genious, Mark Zuckerman comes off as a social 'ritard' on most every level. Not to mention a facebook creeper.

Check it out.

Sorry GIA,
Could not disagree with you more. First off, every good story needs someone you can root for or at least someone interesting. There is neither in this movie. The main character is a sniveling, vindictive little nerd. His friends are geeks and spoiled rich kids. That is not the point though. The main reason this movie fails (for me at least) is that once the main storyline is put in place (facebook takes off, others are mad about it),the movie just sits there, stuck in neuteral. It never evolves into anything beyond that point. A charactar study of the main guy would have been interesting, but I feel this movie was like some boring courtroom drama that has played out on the smallscreen about a million times. Nothing to see here, move along.

I give it 2 stars out of 5.

I didn't realize Beef saw the movie yet.

While I do agree with James Meatball that it did kind of peter out towards the end - the movie was based upon a book about the founding and lawsuits involved with Facebook.

It is what it is. I found it to be an interesting character study...

I did enjoy the fact that one guy played the twins too - couldn't tell from the movie.

Wow!!!! JP and I...are in total agreement.

This is a slovenly paced, uneven mess. There is absolutely no character development, and no one...I mean...NO ONE...likable. I tried to like Eduardo. But the only reason he's likable is because of how, conversely, Zuckerberg is such an emotionless asswipe.

There's also nothing to be learned about the actual development of Facebook. Let's not forget that in 2006, Facebook wasn't popular among anyone but college kids. It was MySpace that was the king of the crop. It wasn't until 2008 and after that FB became more popular and I'd say only in the last year has it rose to almost Google-like status. This movie makes it look like FB was the creator and inventor of what we now know as social networking, only making a passing mention of MySpace and Friendster (which I was on, back in 2003--oh and by the way...they had relationship statuses, too, IIRC).

What really drove me nuts was Sorkin's continuous insistence on making every goddamn character have an IQ of over 150. NOBODY TALKS LIKE THIS. Maybe a handful of people...ok. In "The West Wing" it worked. You expect, even in a fantasy White House world, that everyone is smart and quippy. In this realm it doesn't work at all. Everyone's got a get a "This is what the audience is thinking, and I'm going to make it a really clever, snappy line so that everyone will laugh and think it's clever!" line. My prime example is the trophy fish analogy.

I didn't like the casting of Timberlake. Almost every scene he was in, except his last, was basically like "Hi. I'm Justin Timberlake. I'll be playing the part of Sean Parker."

About the facts of Facebook...I think this was probably pretty inaccurate. That's what I've heard anyway. But this isn't my issue. Here's my issue.

Aaron Sorkin wrote:
"I don’t want my fidelity to be to the truth; I want it to be to storytelling," Sorkin told New York magazine. "What is the big deal about accuracy purely for accuracy’s sake, and can we not have the true be the enemy of the good?"

The big deal is that you wrote a BAD SCRIPT, Sorkin. If this is nominated, along with "Inception", for best screenplay, I'm going to do something of extremely hyperbolic suggestiveness.

This movie is not good. It's pandering, dull, and annoying. And it's not even an interesting story because there's no cause of conflict, no resolution, and absolutely no point at all. Except that power can bring greed and blah blah blah...real original.

:D :) out of :D :D :D :D

* The only reason I don't give this an Ohfer is because Andrew Garfield, once again, was very good. And so was Eisenberg, for what it's worth. Their characters weren't well drawn but they were good at their performances. And I had a few chuckles early on. The first 20 minutes of the film were very good. Then it just, as JP said perfectly, "sat there."

I saw this on Monday and didn't even bother to comment on it. Huge
disappointment. I barely even remember what half of it was about since
nothing was going on. Only character I remember from it at all was Justin
Timberlake. Maybe I was watching him a bit more closely since he seems
to be trying to make himself into a more serious actor. He plays the creator
of Napster in this one. My advice would be to skip it.

I kept seeing the commericals about how this was so great so I decided to
rent it and give it another shot. I will admit that it was better on the second
viewing, but still don't see what all the hype is about. I'll stick with my initial
reaction that Timberlake does a pretty good job but he is only one of two things
I'll remember about this movie. The other you ask? I believe I have developed a
small crush on one Rashida Jones. I saw her the other night in I Love You Man and
she plays a small part in this one. Not sure what it is about her since she isn't
really a knockout or anything. Maybe she just has that girl around the corner kind
of charm but she does it for me. She was on Conan the other night and just seems
like a really cool chick.

I think it's like Michael Scott asked the first time he met her "you look very exotic, was your father in the military?"

Not hot, hot but there is just something about her...and I'd love to get some of that money she will inherit.

Yeah, I had no idea Quincy Jones was her father until I looked her up on

This is the main reason I didn't like Sports Night.

I watched the first hour of The Social Network this morning. I was thinking it'll get better when I watch the second half this evening but based on what some of you have said, maybe not.

i didn't like the laugh track on "sports night" but thought the show was pretty solid. this was just a masturbatory exercise by sorkin, and of course the pud gets rewarded with a golden globe.

although "rewarded" may have to be re-defined for something like that.

I finally saw this over the weekend. How this movie is receiving so much acclaim and award nominations is beyond me. The main character is a complete and utter douchebag.

Watched this the other night. I didn't come away thinking it was best picture material but I found the movie to be entertaining and maybe even "good." I'm not really a Sorkin fan either. Zack I disagree with your thought that people don't talk like this. That can be a drawback to scripts by Sorkin but I could buy really intelligent and creative types speaking like this. Or people who attend presitigious universities. Not the Sean Parker character, though. You want far-fetched dialogue? Try most Kevin Smith films or David Mamet scripts.

The movie does move around a bit much. I think what the film was really about was Zuckerberg's own desperate need for acceptance. You have that first scene where he describes the social clubs. The petty rage of blogging about how the girl dumped him and the childish revenge of creating a site to rate the female students at Harvard. His jealousy of Eduardo getting invited to the Phoenix Club and some kind of resentment of the twins for being part of the rich establishment. I think his reaction to their law suit was something like "they are suing me because for the first time in their lives something didn't turn out how it was supposed to for them." And you have the pathetic final scene where he is sitting alone endlessly refreshing his facebook page to see if the girl from the opening of the film has accepted him as a friend.

 yeah like i'm supposed to believe some dorm slut who just slept with the napster guy is as quippy as that in real life. EVERY character sounds the same.

i don't think they developed that enough, and partly that's because sorkin didn't develop the character enough--but also because zuckerberg is hard to develop. i never bought zuckerberg as anyone who truly cared about anything. he is a human computer. he shouldn't have been the main character. it felt more like casual references rather than real drama or conflict. in fact when he's refreshing the page, you could almost interpret that as boredom rather than desperation.

Even more to the point, are we to believe that someone who is portrayed as having a borderline social anxiety disorder suddenly develops the speech of a philosopher under the most stressful moments in his life and is able to make some of the brightest people in the world look foolish? I'm sure if you read the transcript of his depositions you wouldn't find a single line that made you think deeply, but these flow from his mouth easily in the movie.

I liked the movie.

this was my review for it:

http://thereviewbin.com/the-social-network.htm

i think the thing is, i wasn't captivated by the story, so the dialog was just distracting to me. kevin williams had a similar style in "dawson's creek" and joss whedon sometimes does the same thing. if the story works, then it doesn't bother me. here it just stuck out because the story didn't do a thing for me.

This. Finally watched it last night. Liked it, didn't love it. Agree with everything that's been said about Timberlake in this thread,
and Jesse Eisenberg's pinched "Did someone fart?" awkward and emotionless flatness makes Michael Cera look like Daniel Day Lewis.
Loved the cinematography and the score though.

Saw it last night. Short and sweet, felt like I was watching a documentary or something on the history channel. The only thing I got out of it is that Mark was a complete douchebag up until a point where he realized that he really fucked over his friend. He obviously despised the VanDerschlok (Harvard Network guys) or whatever twins.

The dialogue was so damn fast that I was getting worn out and needed a cigarette (even though I don't smoke). There wasn't much character development (exceprt for Mark) and I didn't really care about the characters one way or another.

2.5 out of 5 stars.

JUST BELEIVE in ME! This movie sucked, but come Oscar time the "Jewish Cartel" will love rewarding a movie about an intelligent and very rich Jewish nerd. I don't get it,Bill Gates gets a TV mini-series a few years back (which I liked) but this shmuck gets a movie? Hollywood loves putting "message" movies at the forefront come Oscar time. So I expect the movie about a stutterer and this piece of shit will be getting the nod. The message here? When your rich AND heartless,it may make you more rich.

I tried 3-4 and each was too big or wouldn't post so I gave up. I think you can figure out what the theme was when a guy talks about watching Dawson's Creek.

I thought the movie was good. Should it get an Oscar for best picture? No but its still very solid. Eisenberg, Garfield and Timberlake where pretty good in their roles

Saw this Monday night. Pretty decent flick. Solid acting especially fron Eisenburg and Very surprised by Timberlake. He has some serious chops. He was good in Alpha dog but here he shows the right level of slime as Fanning.
The main thing I took from this movie is that Zuckerberg really needs to fix his image because he is a total tool and clueless as to how to interact with society.

Saw it today and found the story pretty week. A much better story would have been some suspense thriller about creeps that are ON facebook.
