I'm Bears playoff drunk so it may take some time to process this Vernon Wells trade. Toronto gets Napoli and Rivera and doesn't have to pay any of Wells' remaining $86M salary?!? Where the hell was Hendry all day??

They have someone younger waiting to step up for everyone of the positions they lost this off season....except the pen. They could easily win the AL west and be in the mix in the Central, but its going to be a struggle in their division. Maybe the yankees have regressed enough this off season that they can take the glorious wild card from them.

I hear some cheese will do the trick and sober you up. I think there was some monetary compensation sent the way of the Angels in this trade as well.

$5M is all Toronto is sending. Tony Reagins has been moving up my worst GM in baseball list the last couple years but now he is cemented in that spot. Holy crap what a terrible deal.

I'm starting to wonder if MLB has much of a future in Toronto with Vernon Wells going to Anaheim. They let Alex Rios and his contract go to the Southside for nothing and now this.

It's rare that a team can keep contending with waves of young players. Losing veterans like Pena, Crawford, Garza, and Soriano will hurt. You wanna put your money on Matt Joyce, Reid Brignac, Wade Davis, Dan Johnson, etc, be my guest. I'll say under .500 easy.

I would put my money on Sean Rodriguez, Desmond Jennings, Davis and Hellickson being their next crop of stars.

Given the Ray's track record of talent evaluation, I wouldn't say easily under .500. I would gladly take a bet on that. However, that may involve some deeper form of interaction than just responding to each others posts and that would be unpleasant, at least on my end. So, I guess we'll just have to wait and see, sans wagers.

Rangers acquired C Mike Napoli from the Blue Jays for RHP Frank Francisco and cash considerations.

Nap wasn't a Blue Jay for long. How is the coke-head going to find playing time for all these guys the Rangers are acquiring? They already signed Torrealba to catch, Young and Moreland are going to play first and DH. Where does Napoli fit in? Sometimes having too many options is a bad thing.

Maybe the Cubs can sign Vlad as a 6th OF?

The other ramification is that does this mean Neftali Feliz isn't going to be a starter now? The talk was that he was likely to be stretched out and tried there as Frank Francisco resumed the closing duties, which he did masterfully in early 2009 before an injury...

Napoli was in a platoon in LA with Mathis. Since Torrealba doesn't scream "franchise catcher" it will probably be another platoon situation. Treanor and Teagarden are minor leaguers. As for the rest, I don't see a wealth of depth at any position. Whoever loses the Chris Davis/Mitch Moreland battle will sit the bench or go to the minors...again.

Yeah I don't see Feliz moving to the rotation unless they go get a closer.

The Blue Jays are nearing 5yr/$65M extension with third baseman Jose Bautista.

Wow. Bautista is cashing in big time after his huge 2010 season. Not sure I'd give a 5 year commitment to a guy whose HR total has gone 16, 15, 15, 13, 54. The Jays may have ridded themselves of one bad contract only to hand out another.

59 HR in four years and then 54 in one...it all sounds kosher to me. Give him the farm.
Baseball has never been short on idiots willing to throw huge piles of bad money around. Alphonso Soriano agrees, just ask him

Now that Wells is gone, they need a bad contract to hold them down.

Keyser, Reason, anybody: what are your thoughts on the deal the Brewers gave Weeks? 4 years 38.5 million guaranteed and a earned option for the 5th year at 11.5 million. He was very good last year and has the ability, but they better hope he can finally stay healthy.

IMO Weeks is too big of an injury risk for that type of money. Hasn't only really had one good year?

I know, but I think part of the reason they did it was they didn't want to lose both sides of the infield in the same offseason. Prince is gone and it would have been really bad losing both of them. Especially know that Betencourt may not be able to play short and you would have been turning over 3/4ths of your infield.

I like it. It's a deal they had to do after trading Lawrie and buying out 3 years of free agency is huge. I also like that there is an incentive option for a 5th year if he plays well in years 3 and 4. This will definitely take some of the sting out when Prince leaves after this season.

Yankees signed RHP Kevin Millwood to a minor league contract.

I thought the Yanks already scrapped the bottom of the barrel but apparently there was something left. Millwood went 4-16 with a 5.10 ERA for the Orioles last season.

Pfft. Jo Jo Reyes made Toronto's rotation this year... LET THE RENAISSANCE BEGIN! I can't wait to see Jo Jo dominate the AL East.

Reyes made the rotation because Morrow will start the season on the DL. He'll probably be back in the bullpen when Morrow returns.

Brewers acquired OF Nyjer Morgan from the Nationals in exchange for INF/OF prospect Cutter Dykstra and cash considerations.

Interesting move. The Brewers must have NO trust in Carlos Gomez. The fact that they trade for a centerfielder rather than a pitcher also tells me they're not overly concerned about the injuries to Grienke and Marcum.

I wonder if they are going to hit Morgan first and drop Weeks down to a more run producing spot in the order.
