Jimmer vs Alford

"The University of New Mexico men's basketball team will host #9 BYU on Saturday. BYU's Jimmer Fredette is the hottest player in college basketball right now. The senior sharpshooter scored 39 points or more against four Mountain West Conference teams already.

Back in the day, UNM men's basketball coach Steve Alford was a pretty big deal himself in the college basketball world. He helped Indiana win a national title and Alford was also a part of the gold medal winning USA Olympic team. While I don't think the Cougars will win it all this year (though they are a top ten team), I think the comparisons between Fredette and Alford are pretty similar.

First, the USA Olympic basketball team as we know it now is full of professionals. If it was still a group of college players, Fredette's name would be on the list. Aside from a team record comparison, let's take a look at their individual stats.

Alford scored 2,438 points during his college career. Fredette currently has 2,064 and counting. Alford was a four year starter with the Hoosiers. Fredette is a three year starter with the Cougars. Alford was named 1st team All America, Fredette is likely to win the same honor. Alford was the Big Ten MVP and Fredette is a shoe-in for the Mountain West award this year (in fact, he's the leading candidate for National Player of the Year). Both are lights out shooters who don't miss their free throws. Alford was an 89.8% free throw shooter during his career and Fredette is 88% from the line. Alford only played one season with the three point line and shot 53% from behind the arc. Fredette is a career 40% shooter from three point range. Alford was one of 5 players named to the Big Ten's Silver Anniversary team and Fredette is arguably one of the greatest players in Mountain West history."

Nice info, and not a shot at you hussra, but being "arguably one of the greatest players in Mountain West history" is not something to write home to mom about.

Fredette can make his own shot and Alford couldn't. Fredette can handle the rock; Alford couldn't. Other than their skin color and being under 6'4", there is no comparison ability wise.

Oh, yeah, np -not my write up, but interesting that Alford only played 1 season with the 3 point line. Killer %age for Alford from 3 tho.

Don't recall if Alford had more than a cup of joe in the NBA, but if Stephen Curry can play starter's minutes in the NBA, Fredette should at least go mid-to-late 1st round in the draft. Would be a steal early 2nd round too. Could be there for the Bulls late 1st round and be D Rose's Paxson or Kerr--late game sharpshooter/money FT guy to put the Bulls over the top.

Alford seems like top college coach--when's he gonna get out of that MWC ghetto and take over a Big Ten or other front-line college hoops program. Seems like Alford could write his own ticket at any program outside of Duke/Kansas/Kentucky/the other top ehhh college hoops programs.

He already tried that at Iowa remember...it didn't work that well.
