Looks like the Lakers are looking to shake things up. Who do you think will go? Who could they target?

Artest is the easy choice but I'm not sure who wants him and his contract. Bynum is tough. He is still really young but his knees don't want to act right. When healthy he is a monster. I wonder if they want in on Melo. I could see Odom leaving. I think the only guys that aren't available are Kobe and Gasol. I think they would love to get a PG.

HOVA replaying ESPNS stories of Non Stories! Right down to the Artest, most likely, nobody wants him.

Chris Broussard story about nothing.

Close but no cigar.

LOS ANGELES -- A day after Los Angeles Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said he would consider a trade amid the team's recent struggles, Magic Johnson said on Tuesday the Lakers need to make a deal to improve a team he believes isn't good enough to win a championship.

"I think we have to," Johnson said. "We have to do something. The Lakers are not responding and two things showed me that -- the Miami Heat Christmas game and then the Boston Celtics game [on Sunday]. When you don't get up for your two biggest games during the season and you have flat performances, then you have to start looking at trade possibilities to improve the team and bring some energy to the team and bring some new life to the team."

Johnson, who sold his shares in the Lakers in October, made the comments after speaking at a news conference at the Los Angeles Convention Center to announce a naming rights deal for Farmers Field, a proposed football stadium in downtown Los Angeles next to Staples Center. Johnson is planning on becoming a part-owner if Los Angeles gets a new NFL team.

"Unfortunately we're looking old and we're playing old," Johnson said. "We're not responding to the more athletic teams and the quicker teams. So we must change something. I think we have to now look at this team and maybe say we're not good enough. Things might have to change."

Lakers head coach Phil Jackson said Kupchak's comments were rather obvious.

"If we weren't always looking to benefit our team, we wouldn't be doing our business," Jackson said after shootaround Tuesday afternoon in preparation for a game against the Rockets. "So, it was a good calling card that Mitch threw out there."

When asked to clarify what he meant by the phrase "calling card," Jackson said, "The door's open for business."

The 11-time championship winning coach did not feel the Lakers have fallen into a dire situation requiring drastic changes, even though L.A. has lost four out of its past seven games and already had four- and three-game losing streaks earlier in the season.

Jackson said the thinking on the Lakers' part about their situation is different from when the Orlando Magic had lost five out of six games in December and management decided to overhaul their roster, making deals to acquire Hedo Turkoglu, Jason Richardson and Gilbert Arenas while shipping out Vince Carter, Rashard Lewis and Marcin Gortat.

"We're obviously not happy with the way we've played recently, that's the last couple losses that we've had, but the reality is we have a team that is pretty experienced and knows how to play in the playoffs so I doubt if we'd do a multiple-change [trade or something] that big," Jackson said.

If you have management and Phil thinking the Lakers need to shake things up then I'm sure they will make a deal. Wouldn't make sense to make a deal for a bench player either. They need a guy that could and probably will start. That's why PG makes the most sense to me. They were interested in Kirk Hinrich last year but they wanted the Bulls to take back Vujacic.

It's an ESPN story. Someone writes about it on ESPNLA, then they report it nationally and they let Broussard tell us exactly what you said, that most likely nothing will happen unless someone wants to pickup Ron Artest's 3 years and 22 Mill deal, while he is having his worst year ever at 31, thus resulting in Chris Broussard telling us most likely nothing will happen.

It's how ESPN works. They have a ton of air time to fill and if anyone at a local outlet Chicago, NY, LA has a story, they will air it. It kills time.

shockingly, i agree with BF

what are their assets? as has been mentioned, no one wants Artest. Kobe and Gasol are obviously untouchable. Odom might bring you some value but you'd also be giving up someone fairly valuable....I think for what he makes Odom is a pretty good value, i'm not sure what they could get back for him and his salary that would make them better. so who's left? Walton? Blake? the way I see it Bynum is the only piece they can really trade, and while I agree with HOVA that he's a pretty damn good player when healthy, is another team really going to take that risk? that's a huge contract to take on. i guess if you think a Bynum for Hinrich swap (or something similar, the Lakers would probably be taking on a bad contract in return) would help them, so be it. that's about all i see them doing other than just a minor move.

I agree. And I think it's pointless to make a move for the sake of making a move. Might as well keep the team intact and ride it out. The wheels have been falling off the Laker train since last February anyway.

Doesn't matter much. Dallas and San Antonio will be in the Western Finals, and the Lakers are gonna be blowing this team up soon anyway.

every single team is looking at trades! It's the GM's job to "LOOK" at trades. It's really not a story that some kid in LA asked Mitch K if they would consider a trade and he says yes. STOP THE PRESSES!

i wouldn't be so sure of it. they're coasting. weren't the Celtics the 4th seed last year? and made it to game 7 of the Finals

i think they'll be fine as-is

I can see them trying to get an overpaid veteran PG. If Billups can find his way out of Denver via trade or buyout he would be a perfect candidate. The Lakers can make a deal but they will have to give up Bynum or Odom and/or take back a terrible contract to get it done. These are the only teams I see the Lakers being able to get something done with:

Denver
New Orleans
Portland
Toronto
Washington

They would have to play big and I'm not sure if they are desperate enough to do that yet.

Here's another possible trade for the Lakers.

Bynum $13,842,332
Odom $8,200,000
Derrick Caracter $473,604
Theo Ratliff $1,352,181
2 future first round picks
$5M trade exception

for

Carmelo Anthony $17,149,243
Chauncey Billups $13,150,000
Al Harrington $5,765,000

The numbers work and it would save the Nuggets about $45M over the next 5 seasons.

$8M this season
$15M next season (when you deduct the contracts of the guys they are trading away. $39M to $24)
$21.5M the next 3 years (don't have to pay Harrington's terrible contract)

The Lakers would be in cap hell but they would likely win a few more titles.

If they could do that, why not? The Lakers will need a new franchise player soon. Kobe probably has another two years left at the most.

This is probably his last year as a top 5 player but I think he can be good for another 5 years.
