You're right about the past. However looking around the league right now many of the best young players (under 25) are PG's. Still the PG's being the best player on a championship trend is likely to continue for a few more years with the Heat sure to take off in the next couple of years.

And also it's semantics, there's many guys who aren't technically a point guard, but on many to most plays, they are in essence the point guard.
Like Lebron, Kobe, Iguodala, T Evans....so in that sense, you'd have to include Lebron and Kobe.
