What do you guys think of Peter King's idea's for the Bears quaterback situation for next season? http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/w ... index.html

I don't want Jeff Garcia or Jake Plummer, and I'm not sure I want to draft Troy Smith in Round 1 over elp we need at other positions. David Carr isn't going to solve any problems, plus with his contract, I'm assuming the Bears would take on a massive cap hit with that contract.

Keep Grossman and Griese, and we're going to have to hope that Grossman can continue to grow as a QB - if he does, he'll get a contract extension. If not, then the Bears are going to be in some trouble, but they can win games with Griese, and a good running game/defense, but they may not be any better than a NFC contender.

I could go either way with Garcia. It depends on how much money he wants. Pretty unlikely. I think Gresie is under contract for next year, as is Rex. Unless you can somehow get someone to take Rex off your hands, it wont happen. You cant afford to pay 3 QBs a total of 10 million dollars. If you are going to do that, you might as well bite the bullet and make a play for McNabb. I dont see Garcia as being that much of a better option than Grossman. Sure, he wont make the big mistakes, but he wont be a difference maker. I would much rather tag Briggs, dump Ogunleye(sp?), get some depth in the secondary, and find a better option for a 3rd WR. Jeff Garcia wont be the difference.

Only feasible options are 1 or 3. I like David Carr and think he would be decent if he had more than one second to throw the ball. Not sure of the cap ramifications on that one, though.
Jeff Garcia was terrible in Cleveland because they didn't run the West Coast Offense. He'd have the same problem here. Plus, and I can't stress this enough, he's Jeff Garcia.
Troy Smith? Maybe if he falls to them in the second round. But I don't see how he helps them win now.
Jake Plummer? Isn't he pretty much a clone of Grossman?
I say give Rex the keys and treat him with the trust of an 18 year old with your 15 year old daughter.

I heard this week Peyton Manning spent a good part of last off-season working on his footwork, which he really didn't need to but did anyway.

I believe Rex will be better next year and with some extra off-season training (see above), he too can be that much better.

I can't imagine he wouldn't bust his a$$ on fixing the things he had problems with last season. If he doesn't try to fix them, or can't get it, then move on to plan B.

Until then, wait 'til next year.

We don't know about any of the three at this point really.

Grossman- Discussed to death and will continue to be. He could end up great or he could end up gone.
Griese- They thought he was good enough to sign him to a big long term contract, but he really hasn't had any meaningful playing time in a Bears uniform.
Orton- Good effort for a rookie, but needed much improvement from then. Haven't seen much of anything from him to really know either way.

We have 3 qb's who we really can't make a determination on. Keep them all, open up the job, and lets see who wins. Griese should be good enough to be a viable option for a year if Grossman and Orton are not the answer.

After handing Grossman the job with no competition the last several years, I just don't see them deciding to do it now after they made the SB with him.

You really are a meatball if you think that we shouldn't play the best QB on the team. Players do improve from their rookie years you know. The QB competition should be open and if Orton is the best one in the preseason than he should start.

I guess you would rather just hand the starting job to Rex again.

The irony here is rich because one of the main arguments from the Grossman apologists is that he will be very good in the future because he will continue to improve. Certainly many NFL players improve to some degree as their careers advance, but substantial improvent is guaranteed to no one. Given Grossman's obvious physical limitations and Orton's more desirable physical attributes, it's conceivable that he may eventually become a better QB than Grossman.

I just want the Bears to figure out if Rex or Orton is actually going to be the guy for the next 4-5 years. That's all I really want as a Bears fan.

I don't want a 37 year old QB castoff who was good for 5 games.

If Rex has a brain, he's going to bust his ass this offseason b/c if he sucks this next year, he's going to lose a ton of money as a free agent.

Rex is signed through next year.

When Orton was drafted, nobody thought he would get a sniff of the field before year 4. I have not given up on him but he should not even be given the opportunity to be the backup next year.
