D Rose is close to must watch tv for me. He does exciting stuff seemingly every game. I was having a discussion at work, and I said that Rose is becoming close to Jordan in terms of exciting to watch. With Jordan, I felt he was very exciting early in his career. Obviously we had the full length of Jordan's career to watch, while Rose is still early on. I'd like some other comments on how close Rose is for you in terms of excitement level and must watch relative to your memories of Jordan.

It's not even close yet.

The difference to me is simple. What Rose is doing is coming within the offense..He's a one of a kind. Jordan got the ball and went to the hole. No passing. He didnt look to. If he passed it to Orlando Woolridge he'd never get it back. Brad Sellers or Kyle Macy? I wouldnt pass to them either. Rose will never be the lock down defender that Jordan was since day one with Bulls. But like I said a few months back with no offense to Pip, Rose is definitely the 2nd best Bull ever.

Wow Bagels, that's how it's done.

Rose is pretty goddamn good, but I'm not sure he's the best player in the league, much less as good as JORDAN.
But he's got the potential. He's not there yet. Not to Jordan levels. But I like that his long shot is coming along this year. That's big, maybe work on a fadeaway and we'll talk about it.

I would say it is now approaching an excitement level close to when Jordan was a rookie/2nd year. The first two years Rose was good to real good. This year he is accomplishing things (incredible things) on par with Jordan. I am not stating one is equal to or better than the other. They are now, however, on equal footing in terms of must see TV.

The regular seasons near the tail end of the 2nd run of Championships (dare I say it) were kind of boring.
I can't remember 1988 very well, so it's hard to say if I'm more excited now that I was then.

Bagels you rock. See he doesn't know how good D Rose is because he hasn't seen him. D Rose does amazing things on a regular basis. I know Jordan is the highest of hurdles, but I am projecting this out a bit in my original comment. D Rose has had moves this year that are reminding me.......of the greatest.

The way Rose can weave to the hoop and get a shot off is like nothing I've seen a guy be able to do. However, contact will throw him off and he doesn't seem to get the calls so he ends up throwing up many more awkward looking shots than Jordan does and missing them.

Jordan could finish stronger at the hoop more consistently but, where Jordan might beat one guy with a move and then get contested, Rose often beats 2 or 3 guys off the dribble and then throws something up.

one of the things he does that's so amazing to me is his ability to find an open man once he's in the air.....they always say never leave your feet to make a pass, but it seems like he can hang in the air forever and then pass it at the last second to someone who's usually wide open since everyone is converging on him

As much as he may take exception to this, Derrick Rose isn't nearly the defender that Michael Jordan was. Besides, it took the Bulls 7 years before M.J. won his first NBA Championship as we all know. I don't know right now if this Bulls' team with Rose wins the Larry O'Brien Trophy in just Derrick's third season in the NBA.

The passing and that kind of vision is incredible also. If he continues to improve his 3-point shot, it's scary to think how good he'll be at age 25.

He'll be an unstoppable scorer, which he already kind of is, but with a couple more years experience to understand what he needs to do at the hoop and he'll be getting the superstar calls, he'll get 30+/night in his sleep.

Jordan wasn't known as any kind of defensive specialist until about 1987 when people starting getting on him about his defense and so he went out and won Defensive POY when he was about 24 years-old.

Yup. I probably wouldn't have watched if I wasn't at the gym on the treadmill with nothing else to watch but Women's college basketball, which is unwatchable. The fact that I tuned in to a Bulls game certainly doesn't mean that my opinion about the NBA has changed or that Rose is as good as MJ.
Rose is good...but comparing him to Jordon at this point is ridiculous & pointless.

I've always held the opinion that modern-day sportswriters and fans want to find the "next greatest of all time" way too frequently. Everyone is waiting to see who we can anoint as the "Second Coming" to Jordan.

With that being said, Derrick Rose is it.

This question is all about perspective; Bears fans are always going to be locked in the "good old days" of Ditka and Sweetness. Bulls fans will always compare everything to Jordan and Pippen.

The league is more talented now than it was with Jordan. Every new generation learns from the successes of the one which preceeded it. The talent level will continue to improve annually.

Derrick Rose is about to win the MVP of the league at 22 years old. That's about as much perspective as you should need.

Hold up, there. That's a whole 'nother thread.

I'm willing to entertain Rose's tremendous ability. However, while the athletic ability might be better now, I'm not going to say that skill/talent level is better.

The number of superstars has always been the same; every team had their "guy" back during the Jordan era. That fact remains the same to this day.

However, everyone around these superstars are also better than the supporting casts of yester-year. I would be interested to see a comparison between the number of 50+ point games within the last 5 years in comparison to the final 5 years of Jordan's career.

3-0 against the Heat.

Well, yeah dude, but the real season is a few weeks away.
In terms of a long term threat, I think the heat are dangerous. They're going to be damn good for a while.

You just hate the fact that you agree with me.
I'll say this again for you slow readers with comprehension difficulties...any discussion comparing Rose & Jordan is just plain stupid & premature. DR is a very good player & I'll probably tune in a few more games than I would normally watch as this team gets closer to the playoffs, but for the love of God, let the kid win at least 1 MVP & 1 NBA championship before we put him in the team photo with MJ.

I don't know what that would prove.

I know scoring is down about 10-12/game on average, per team, than it was 15 years ago and that's with them taking the hand-check and the forearm defending away.

Long term they maybe a threat, but I am not convinced of that yet. This year specifically I am not worried about them.
