I heard Buzz Williams to Mizzou but not sure that makes much sense. He's the
bee's knees at Marquette and they have a huge war chest that they spend on
hoops up there.

I think Brad Stevens would turn them down too unless he believes that this two year run was an anomaly and can't be replicated. The IU job makes a lot of sense, but if he has a few more good years he can pretty much choose where he goes. There are going to be lots of old coaches retiring from traditional basketball powers. UCONN, Duke, North Carolina, and a few others all have old coaches. IU is also a possible destination but to be honest I think that if Crean fails enough to get fired that Stevens wouldn't want the pressure of fixing it.

You'll get Dane Fife or Steve Alford when you fire Crean.

You really think UConn, Duke, or UNC is going to look to Butler to get their next coach? I don't, no matter how much success he has at Butler.

If IU gets Steve Alford as their next coach I will be joining you as a Boilermaker fan.

Going to be an interesting year with the coaching carousel, you have the following openings:

Tennessee, Mizzou, Georgia Tech (they are talking to Tulsa's coach), Oklahoma, NC State and Utah

AND you've already hired at Providence, Arkansas

The Buzz rumor I heard was to OU (they were offering a raise to 2M a year)

If IU would then so would they. IU still considers itself an elite program, and it could be. While not on the exact same level, Arizona took a coach from Xavier and Ohio State did too. I think that coaches are less likely to move since money really doesn't matter any more and you can get more job security. Painter would have to be bad for 5 years before he'd get fired and the money will take care of itself. If he went to North Carolina or Kentucky and didn't win a national title he'd be fired. IU learned just how hard it was to attract a coach when they fired Sampson. Crean was not the first choice if reports are to be believed.

I see what you are saying Rick, but I just think that programs like UConn, Duke, and UNC are going to get their next coach from inside their own program or someone closely associated to their coaching tree thus leaving someone like Stevens out of the mix for them.

The Duke coaching tree is bad though. I don't know enough about the other ones.

I could see you being right though. They probably still can get whoever they want. I wouldn't blame any coach for leaving for Duke or UNC.

Uconn will have to go outside for their next hire. The assistant head coach Blaney is over 70. You don't move a program forward replacing one geezer with another (unless you are UNC and get lucky to win a title with maybe the worst coach ever seen).

At UNC, I could see them giving Steve Robinson a chance (he used to be the head man at FSU and a kick ass recruiter) or having to go to the well and bring in Phil Ford who is always rumored to be on the list for that job.

There is no one else connected to the UConn program other than the 70 yr old dude?

Most of UConn's successful history is all recent (90's and 2000's). For instance, they've made the Eilite 8 10 times, 9 since 1990.

I suppose they could go to Kevin Ollie - he's an assistant now.

Wow. And the season ends with zero teams in the Elite Eight. Disappointing.

I think you have to throw this out, I don't know how much Matta had a hot seat if any, but shouldn't he now. This is the 2nd straight year he had a Final 4 team and out in the sweet 16. Matta brings good players in, gets the win in the regular season, but struggles in the tournament. Even the year, he made the final game, they came real close in losing the second game to Xavier.

They may care more about football down there, but still I think the question needs to be asked. I know this is basketball, but did this Buckeye run keep people's minds of Tressel for a little while and now they will be back on him.

A lot of people seem really worried that Painter is gone. I think it's all baseless speculation but our athletic director certainly has the ability to screw this up.

80% of me is really scared that this would be huge damage to the program. The other 20% of me looks back at the last 5 years and sees similarities to the Gene Keady era.

The biggest key whether he stays or goes is keeping together the recruiting classes of the next few years.

I still say he stays, but if he doesn't expect a post that will look like sour grapes. The quick preview is that I don't think Painter has earned $2.5 million a year but he may get $2.5 million a year.

Just throwing this out, if Painter does leave and I don't think he will either, but if he does, Purdue stay in state and go get Brad Stevens.

They'd be lucky to get him. In my planned "sour grapes, we didn't want Painter anyways" post Stevens would be the example of a guy who may actually be better for the future of the program.

The problem with a succession plan is that you may get more of the same. I think Purdue should have done better than 2 sweet sixteens the past 5 years.

If Purdue doesn't have the modest money to keep Painter, I don't see where they get the money to lure Stevens.

That's the thing. Purdue obviously has money. If Painter leaves, it's likely because he didn't get along with the AD or felt disrespected or is afraid of being Keady 2.0 or really loves arches and bbq. Purdue would be stupid not to match Missouri's offer.

They then take that $2.5 million a year and make a statement by getting a big time coach. It's not like they are paying Danny Hope anything. They've got the money.

Hopefully this is the wakeup call that they needed. The AD has lived too long on making Purdue football relevant.

If I was Weber I'd be ready to jump ship but I'm not sure I want that.

It is all just a power play by Painter to get more $$ from Purdue. No way he ends up at Mizzou.

Brick, you seem hard to read on this one. In one sentence it seems like you want Painter to stay and in others it seems like you almost are ready for him to be gone.

At this point, I'll be surprised if he stays. There is way, way, way too much smoke here. I just hope that if Painter goes that the AD follows him out the door. He clearly didn't value Painter enough to keep him happy.

I want him to stay, I've just started rationalizing him leaving to make myself feel better.

In reality, I've had concerns about Painter for a while, but certainly not enough to want him gone. I have more concerns about the athletic department as a whole. I'll get more into it when he is officially gone but I think that the Robbie Hummel injury excuse covered up some other issues.

Well as a fringe Mizzou fan I would be thrilled if they got someone like Painter. But I still don't see it. I figure they will end up with a current mid major coach.

Maybe Painter can go to Mizzou and Weber goes to Purdue and Pearl goes to Illinois.

Illinois fans are still (irrationally) pissed that Bill Self went to Kansas. If Matt Painter leaves to go to Mizzou, I'd imagine he'll need full security detail to ever return to West Lafayette.

Painter now officially meeting with Missouri. This one's over.

Unless the AD pulls a rabbit out of his hat and keeps Painter or gets Stevens or a big time coach I think I'm done supporting a program that doesn't care. I'll still follow the teams but until they show a reason to care neither will I.

I think the AD is going to get the majority of the grief for this one. His management of Danny Hope already has people questioning the commitment to the revenue sports.

The sad thing is I don't blame Painter. If the rumors of why he's leaving are true then I would too. There is a rumor that the President is actually using part of the BTN funds for non-athletic stuff!

Another Purdue guy maybe coming to Mizzourah as Paul Lusk is considered one of the top candidates to replace Martin at Missouri State.

There's no doubt in my mind Weber would take the Purdue job if it opened up and he were offered it. He still rhapsodizes about the "great friends" he and his wife made there whenever he gets the chance.

I don't think Painter leaves, but maybe I want him too, to get some stories about the Atheltic Department.

Since there was talk about Danny Hope, I think this is the big year and if he doesn't produce he should be gone, but things outside coaching make me hope he is gone. You can blame Rich Rod for getting a Purdue player suspended, but the player did a cheap shot after the game was over. Gettin mad at Illinois for scoring a late td, you have a defense you can stop them, of course that could be an opinoin thing, but the number 1 thing for me is pulling a scholarship from a kid, just because he's coming off an ACL tear and your players have that injury so you didn't want another one to deal with.

That could be the ugly side of recruiting, but still bring the kid in, if I remember, didn't Purdue get Drew Brees because of a knee injury.

I think Weber would jump at the chance too. Who wouldn't? I go to the illiniboard every so often and he's generally disliked there. He would get a fresh start at Purdue and have years of goodwill built up with much of the fanbase come back. It would suck for Illinois though as Weber made it clear to them that his time at Purdue was done forever.
reents wrote:

If Painter leaves, and his replacement is a cheap hire, then I think the AD isn't long for the school. Big money donors are already restless about the football program.

That was a little bit overblown. He didn't pull the scholarship. He asked him to take a greyshirt year for rehab and start on scholarship in the spring. I wish he hadn't done it but I understand why. If your job was on the line like he is I don't think it's a terrible thing to do. The kid was useless this year anyways and taking a greyshirt gives him 5 years of scholarship clock to play 4 seasons. I want Hope fired unless he wins 8 games next year though. I may accept 7 if it's a "good 7 wins" and not 6 bad teams and 1 upset.
