The Sox website says that Thornton is now 17 out of 41 in career save opp's? Am I reading that right or not?

Before tonight's game:

SV = 17
SVO = 40

Thats a little deceiving because you can get a BS in the 8th, and maybe even the 7th.

He pitched in a number of SAVE settings, but was taken out for Jenks.

HOWEVER, he has NOT done well as a Closer, despite what Frank C will tell me because he doesn't allow EARNED runs.

Any time he coughed up the lead in the 7th or 8th in the previous season, it's counted as a blown save.

He has had some legitimate 9th inning save opportunities over the years during periods when Jenks was injured / unavailable. He has been awful, just like this year. I am no baseball savant (I liked the Teahen acquisition at the time), but it has always been clear to me that Thornton just does not have what it takes upstairs to be a closer. He can pitch the shit out of the 8th inning, but the 9th is a whole different animal.

While I can say I didn't think Thornton would be a great closer, I can't say I thought he would be this bad.

Frank? Your thoughts?

Yeah, but those numbers don't mean he coughed up the lead 23 times. They just mean he entered in a save situation 40 times and finished the game 17 times. The other 23 are some combination of holds and blown saves.

Umm...you're a meatball and when did I ever say Thornton was/will be a great closer?

I am not sure why I am a meatball for saying I never thought Thornton was "the excellent and awesome signing " you said it was, when the move was done. There was evidence that he would not be a good closer and paying him $6 M a year is closer money in Kenny's world.

"This is an excellent signing by Kenny. He turned Joe fucking Borchard into Thornton. What an awesome move!" Frank C

Again, I called the signing great. I never said he would be a great closer. He was never officially the closer until late spring training. Kenny signed his All Star setup guy to an extension and that was a great move.

And you're a meatball because-- even though you assure us you weren't watching the game, that you just merely checked the boxscore :roll: -- you post in this thread Monday night just as Thornton blows the
save.

Is anyone "Officially" a closer on any team? I would say the guy who is making twice as much money in the bullpen, as anyone else is the closer. That's about as close to being 'named' the closer as you can get.

You can lose the role of closer with 4 Blown saves, but it still doesn't change the fact you are suppossed to be the closer.

OK, so if I admit I was watching the game Frank, can I lose the title of Meatball then? I can say I had the game on all night.

If a pitcher gets dcredited with a "hold" it counts against them in the save column? I doubt it....

:lol: Wow. Nobody right now is the closer on the Sox. Joe Nathan, Rivera, Brian Wilson, CARLOS MARMOL, yes those are officially closers.

Actually, it does. Teams change closers a lot. Someone struggles and/or gets hurt, and somebody else steps in. Jose Contreras is the closer right now for the Phillies because Brad Lidge is on the DL. When he comes back, he may or may not be the closer. Doesn't matter what he is "supposed" to be.

No.
