So when it comes to gaming, I think I know a little bit more about it than crotchety Boilermaker Rick does, yeah...
 I doubt this is correct, and considering you don't even own a Wii, I probably have you beat. I am sure I have you beat on consoles owned.

I'd challenge that. You saw how many hours in one year I put on MW2 alone, yes? And that was but a fraction of the games I played that year? And 2010 was a year I didn't play as many video games as I usually did?

Why would I know how many hours you played on MW2? Do you know how many hours I put in WoW, Everquest, and Ultima Online? Do you know how many hours I put into the Intellivision, Colecovision, and Atari before you were even born? Not sure why you'd think you're the only person that plays video games a lot more than they should.

 You are funny. Who cares that you have 3 ps3's? Do you get three times as much video game knowledge when they sit there in a closet while you use the one?

Outside of playstation, because I prefer xbox, I've had every major console since Nintendo and I still do. I played a number of PC games too, which helped lead me to my current profession. I spent a bunch of time in college playing video games as most people our age do.

You were in diapers while I was playing video games and I'm sure that me and many others have spent just as many hours as you playing with friends or games alone. I was playing duke nukem 3d over a telephone modem direct connection to my friends computer and played Warcraft 2 over Kali before battle.net even existed. Starcraft, Asheron's Call, WoW, Gears of War, CoD, mario/zelda just to name a few.

I think I'm qualified enough to talk about video games.

What is wrong with you? I'm a total of 4 years older than you and probably have more free time.

I'm less up to speed on some of the Playstation 3 games because I don't own one and only get to play it at other people's places but I've certainly heard of every game you mentioned.

This has taken a turn for the worse. I remember playing Snafu on Intellivision for hours on end while drunk in high school. Does that give me some street cred?

Because I posted it...multiple times...
You had WoW, EQ, and Ultima? I had RO, FFIX, LOTRO, AoC, and Aion...
And no, there are a fair amount of us that play video games a lot more than we should...I just believe I'm in the lead.

But everything you've played I could have played, but the stuff I played in the 13 more years I've played you couldn't have.

That's the point. I have to laugh that IMU seems to think that the entire board is filled with 80 year old men that grew up playing Parcheesi and tiddlywinks. He probably had to google "intellivision".

Meh...a few months ago I would have thrown down, but now my PS3 is used only for movies and my 360 is mostly used for Netflix, Zune and Dance Central...

Well you shouldn't given that I've owned a Wii for four years and your knowledge of it comes from playing with your roomates wii a few times in the past year.

This is a different story than you claimed before when you stated you play with novembers wii occasionally.

No, I didn't. I simply stated that I don't have a playstation 3 because I prefer having an xbox and don't see much of a reason to get one. I read the same "game of the year" articles that you quoted earlier.
immessedup17 wrote:

You don't know that you play more games than me and congratulations on reading ign. If only I had access to sites like that too I could be as smart as you in regards to video games. Do you read gamespot too? That really makes you an expert.

I don't know how much actual knowledge on video games you have. I do know that I've spent most of my life playing them, and continue to do so very frequently. In fact, I'll buy the wii2 on the first day which will be my 6th nintendo console. I'll also buy the next xbox. I'm more than qualified and I have found a way to overcome you reading a review of "Barbie and the Three Musketeers" on ign so you can self-declare yourself as the CSFMB video games expert.

N64 was the only bad nintendo console, and it was still the best multiplayer console ever created up until then.

I don't regret getting a gamecube or wii for a second though pairing it with xbox/xbox 360 was needed to play the higher end graphics games.

Now this was a system. Terrible controls, check. Terrible graphics, check. Impossibly hard to understand games, check. Countless hours of fun, checkmate.

Jesus yeah and you'd get cheesy plastic inserts for those controllers. They always broke or got lost and who knows what the hell you're doing. I had Astrosmash. I liked that game.

Seems like Nintendo is really trying to get back in favor with the hardcore gamer. At that price range, the casual gamer isn't going to go for it. What's going to factor the most if they can bring back the hardcore gamer is the controller. Will this touchscreen doohicky be cumbersome? If it's too weird, like the Wii remotes are, we won't be seeing any MK or SF games on the system, that's fo' sho'. They are going to need the big time 3rd party games on the system for it to be successful in the long run, and not watered-down versions.

If the controller is going to have the rumored 6" touchscreen, we're already talking clunky. The hardcore gamer is going to have a tough time swallowing that.

Maybe the controller will look something like a DS, where it could flip open and the screen would be above the buttons. It wouldn't be lightweight, but the button layout might be okay. The thing with Nintendo is they're always trying to stand out in some way, trying to innovate. Third party companies aren't always on the same wavelength with Nintendo, so when they see that the system has some goofy ass controller, they decide not to make their games for that system. Hopefully Nintendo will figure out how they can innovate and at the same time make something that other companies will be comforable with.

People laughed at the "remote" controller with the original wii. Considering Nintendo has pretty much introduced every controller innovation since the NES I think it will be good enough to use.

Nintendo knows that if they create a good system that true hardcore gamers will purchase it plus the xbox720 or the playstation4getable.

It was cheap

It had a great gimmick

It catered to casuals who would not purchase a 360 or PS3

Oversimplified, but whatever. That's how I see it.

I can't stand the Wii, but it would be a lie to say that it was not successful. Nintendo doesn't care that "hardcore gamers" considered the Wii to be weak or gimmicky. All they care about is dominating the market share, which they did.

I think the price will define how successful Wii 2 is. The original basically allowed all "non-gamers" to purchase an inexpensive, entertaining system while the 360 and PS3 split the market share of the "hardcore gamers." If Nintendo puts a hefty price tag on the second, it could push away many of the consumers who made the original so successful.

Which is why I don't think they can strike lightning twice.

Hardcore gamers are already comfortable with their systems and exclusive titles, whether they are fans of Microsoft or Sony.

The casuals already have a system, and don't have much of an interest in buying another one so soon, especially if it isn't catered to thrm.

As long as it is cheap enough people will buy it as a place to play 1st party titles, gimmick titles and, pretty importantly, own as a second system.

What will happen with current Wii titles and all the WiiWare, Wii store games the people downloaded?

Most hardcore gamers had a Wii too, or at least had access to one from roommates.

The whole point is that Nintendo is just different. Nintendo is the most innovate console maker in history. They will do it again. Nintendo did just fine after they no longer had the "gimmick" of a rumble pack and joystick on a controller too.

People will buy it because it's good and offers a different experience than the other consoles. Hardcore gamers want to play mariokart and super smash bros. just as much as a 5 year old wants to play Nintendogs.

My 2 cents...

I'm not a gamer...since Super Nintendo & Tecmo Bowl days....but we did purchase a Wii just to have something at the house for the nephews & nieces and kids when they came over and I thought I might get interested in some of the games as well. I had a little interest in the Mario game...but beyond that I thought the Wii sucked. The look and feel of the game(s) is just "wrong" IMO compared to the other games I have seen (not played).

I guess our experiences are just different. The friends I have who all own an xbox 360 and have spent weeks of game time on Call Of Duty,WoW, and now League of Legends still load up those games in group settings.

Even a self proclaimed hardcore gamer like yourself has played significant amounts of at least 10 games on the Wii.

That's a big part of why it was a success. Solid 1st party titles, gimmick/group play games, Wii Store/Ware and it was at the good end of the price spectrum so those who owned xbox/ps3 or both would also buy a Wii. Usually it was someone owned either an Xbox360 or PS3 AND a Wii. Because of it's price it really was able to avoid being someones only console if that someone was a "hardcore" gamer, that and/or their parents would buy it or whatever. It hit all the right pricing and marketing cords.

It still sold though. Nintendo doesn't care that you aren't spending a month straight playing Mario Kart. They care that you are buying it. You, or a roommate did and you likely will when the next one comes out.

That's fine. The key is getting those who do put hundreds of hours playing games to buy it. They did, in massive numbers, and will again when they release the next one.
