He would do pretty good hitting 6-8 in that lineup. He does some nice things. He's willing to take a walk and he hits a lot of doubles. He's also a good right fielder. I'm not saying he would be a superstar but he wouldn't be the colossal failure he is now.

He isnt a colossal failure. Just very overpaid. He is a decent player that gets paid like an all star.

I thought this thread was about the end of Jake Peavy's career, but now it turned into a hindsight debate with more hypothetical assertions than the worst B&B caller.

It's rumored he was offered that. We'll never know if it was realistic. Didn't the Yankees keep on offering up more money to Dice-K in order to force the Red Sox to pay more knowing they didn't have much of a shot?

The reports are that Fukudome wanted to be the first Asian player in the teams history. Therefore, the White Sox had no shot. Kenny may have just made a big offer to force the Cubs to do it too.

Yeah but that didnt work. The Cubs didnt pay more than the Sox offer. The Sox offered more and he turned it down. Kenny's offer didnt drive the price up and why would he care if a National League Central team got a player or not? The fact is that Kenny wanted Fuk and offered more money than anyone.

Thats quite a gamble on a thought that he wanted to be the first asian player.

I mean, some amount of money would have swayed him.

Lets get back to the point

Right now Mark Prior is a more valuable commodity than Jake Peavy

We have no way of knowing if there was every any binding contract offer. Most of this stuff is done verbally until it gets really serious. It's not like Fukudome was sitting at a table with two contracts and a pen.

Hee Sop Choi and Jae-Kuk Ryu might have something to say about this...

In the weeks leading up to his signing the White Sox were always mentioned as a dark horse.
Kenny even spoke of the offer I believe.

Of course it could have been untrue, but so could any report

If you wanna choose not to believe a story that was widely reported and confirmed by the agent and the gm that made the offer because it fits your side of towns agenda....Im ok with that.

The rest of us are aware that its possible, while a slim chance, that Kenny Williams has misjudged a player in his time as GM

Speaking of GM, its understandable that Kenny thought that the Asian product would be better than its American counterpart.

How could he not, with the shitty american cars that have come out over the last 30 years?

It's clear you aren't getting what I am saying. An "offer" was clearly made. I think it's possible that the offer was never considered a serious option and was an act of gamesmanship. Given that Kenny may have done the same thing when claiming Rios off waivers, which was designed to keep him off another team in the division, it's definitely possible. In fact, many were making fun of Kenny for claiming Rios and losing that gamble when Rios was bad the first half season he was here.

You even used the term "dark horse". That basically means that they never had a legitimate shot.

Why would such a 'smart' GM like Kenny care about blocking a team in an entirely different league? Worried about losing the BP Cup???

No one's even mentioned that the Barons still won the game . . .

Quote:
Birmingham (5-6) still beat Mississippi 6-5 on a walk-off wild pitch in front of 2,630 fans.

Tyler Kuhn scored the winning run after tying the game with a two-run triple against Braves pitcher Luis Avilan. Barons reliever Nathan Jones earned his first win with a scoreless ninth inning.

Randall Delgado received a no-decision after allowing three runs (two earned) and eight hits over 6 2/3 innings for the Braves (4-7). He struck out six and allowed just two walks.

Isn't it the stance of most Cub fans that all people associated with the White Sox are obsessed with the Cubs? There is your motive.

Meatball fans are obsessed with the Cubs, rational fans dont care. If a world series GM is more worried about signing a player away from a team that is not in your division or league than maybe he isnt the baseball wizard that most people like to believe he is.

No, Im getting what youre saying. Im just debunking it because it makes no sense.

In fact, I brought up the term "gamble" that you use in trying to explain it to me a few posts up.

Did you not read that?

Boilermaker Rick wrote:

Correct. Kenny made a larger offer than Hendry.

Even if it was gamesmanship, the gamble existed. He could have gotten stuck with Fukudome.

I highly doubt he would make that gamble if he thought Fukudome was gonna be bad.

This is what I disagree with. I don't think it's likely that things ever got that far. I think Kenny was in contact with his agent and said something like "We'd be very interested in paying $XX million for his services" and the agent went to the Cubs and informed them of that. Kenny looks like he's willing to pay big money and the agent uses it as leverage. This all hinges on the fact that the White Sox were never considered a serious destination for him. That's why Fukudome took "less money" to play for a team that makes more money than the Sox.

It just doesn't make sense to me. If the Sox were really considered a serious destination for Fukudome, and they had a legitimate offer that was the highest then why didn't Fukudome go there? I think it's possible the Sox never had a chance at him and the Sox knew it too.

I think its very believable that Fukudome was legitimately scared of white sox fans and their fathers.

Jake Peavy (lat) was diagnosed with muscle tenderness irritation and will miss one start. An MRI came back clean.

He will be placed on anti-inflammatories for six days and will resume a throwing program in four days.

At what point do you shut this guy down for 30 at least days? Isn't this like the 5th "SETBACK" since his muscle tear was supposed to be OK to throw?

if I was Peavy, I would finally shut myself down recognizing I am really in one of those situations that I might not be able to ever pitch again if I do not be really cautious about this

If you were Peavy, you'd have punched Jerry Reinsdorf in the face by now.

I'm going to make the call. Peavy's career is over. Maybe not over-over, but definitley Mark Prior-over.

Book it.

Jake's start at triple A:

6 IP
2 H
0 ER

9 K's

Hopefully this is all he needs and he'll be back with the team early next week.

edit: also in that game Dayan Viciedo went 3-4 with 2 doubles and a home run. He's now hitting .325 with 11 home runs and 47 RBI.
