The Contreras Diet Plan must be back in action. Lost 40 Pounds in 4 months, while not exercising because of his blown Achilles. Really an amazing diet!

Are you saying that this diet was exclusive to the south side?

Not even close! But your GM says that such a diet must exist, because he would have nothing to do with a player using any PED's!

So the Sox must have had a player take PEDs in order to get smaller.

Got it!

Jose Contreras is a guy who belongs in the conversation with Randy Johnson, Greg Maddux, Pedro Martinez, and Roger Clemens as the best pitchers of their generation. He was prevented from playing his prime in the big leagues by a communist dictator. The man is a modern day Satchel Paige and should be in the Hall of Fame, although he never will be.

Come on, man. Maybe every one of them was juiced. I don't know. Clemens was a great pitcher.

Uh-huh. I'll wait until the day I see Johnson, Maddux and Pedro appear before congress but until then they pass my eye test with flying colors.

For what it's worth, Canseco said he didn't believe Clemens juiced up. And he hasn't been shy about accusing anyone.

Clemens is one guy that everyone's most certain juiced. Jose wouldn't know because Canseco was out of baseball by 2001--Andy Pettitte has testified that Clemens did. Pettitte was Clemens teammate several seasons, but in particular 2005. Pettitte suddenly posts a sub 3.00 ERA that season. The same season Clemens set his career low ERA at the age of 42 and appearing on the cover of various bodybuilding magazines with his juicehead wife.

I dunno man, Clemens was always big and threw hard. I remember from early in his career how he was a big workout guy/freak deal. Did he really get bigger? Not so sure

I can post a picture of me at age 24 and one of me now and the difference is similar. I've never taken a PED.

I need to see some for photos of the face.

Either way he seems to have the classic "moon face" or "bloat face" one gets from the added water retention associated with the taking of androgens like Testosterone, Dianabol, Anadrol etc, deca-durabolin causes edema as well and fluid retention in joints and helps with bone density but it's more of an anabolic. You take Test and your estrogen levels will rise as well if you don't take arimidex or other such anti-estrogens.

He looks like Puffy McPuffington when he was with the Astros.

Age 35 has been a solid milestone in many baseball careers for a drop off.

I would say with todays fitness and nutrition, the drop off should not be as steep anymore.

Now, when the dropoff becomes a sudden improvement! Well Sherlock?

Oh and blowing out an achilles at age 35 (or so one says), then doing nothing for 4 months in terms of cardio, and youi drop 40 pounds while doing nothing....pretty incredible!

Oh yes! The "slimming down" from the "new nutritional plan" that all the roid suspected players were on when the testing started. All the juicers (or suspected juicers) were dropping 20+ lbs in the off-season that year, it was hilarious. I remember seeing Sosa, Ivan Rodreguiez (spelling) Giambi etc. It seemed all those guys were on the cutting edge of completely shrinking down to nothing in a few short months!

You guys are so cynical.

He was on the all prune diet. Sheds 30-50 pounds of body waste in under 6 months.

You should look at how puffy Maddux looked when he retired compared to when he was 20. Do you think he juiced too?

Nope. His performance didn't really change all that much. Difference between getting older and getting that 'older' look and looking like Clemens did, or even Palermo. Look at Big Mac, Giambi, Rodriguez, Sosa etc...they have that yoaked/bloated look...well, not really Palmero bc he tested positive for Winstrol which contains DHT and is more geared towards lean mass and performance. Not good for joints though.

It isn't all that hard to tell the difference between a juiced up player and some really old slow ball pitcher.

Joe Borowski! Shed and gained 25 pounds every other season. Throws 88, then 94, then 88, etc.

Contreras is a pimp in that role for the Phillies. IMHO, even if Brad Lidge returns to form they shouldn't remove him from the role.

I wouldn't necessarily go as far as JORR went in describing Contreras, but hey, he was the best pitcher in baseball from the 2nd half of 05 through the playoffs into the first half of 2006. If he's locating his fastball AND he can get that forkball over? Good luck with that.

I think he's especially effective in the closer's role because he only has to go through a portion of the lineup once, so going to the pen has added some valuable years to his career. I bet you that if he retains the closer role all year long he'll save 40 games with an ERA under 2.75. Last year was his first full season as a reliever and he managed career bests of 3.34/1.22, so figuring that his old crusty arse has figured out how to get better in that role, I don't think it's too far-fetched to figure he can pull a sub-2.75 ERA out of his aforementioned old-n-crusty arse!

Oh, and he'll pitch until he's like 43 or something... and he'll be even better than John Franco was at that age, hell, maybe he'll rival Jamie Moyer's solid season at the age of 43. Satchel Paige? That remains to be seen...
