Manny Ramirez was a left fielder. Nuff said.

Paul Konerko has played 18 games in left field during his career. Did they not keep him out there because he was too good?

Alfonso Soriano has played zero games at first base during his career. Is he just too good in left field to move him to such an easy position??

Although you support my position, that's an awful example.
Cubs had a power hitting Gold Glover at first during his tenure with the Cubs.

I thought that was supposed to be the idea on days that Paul Konerko's not in the lineup...Wait a minute. They still have Mark Teahen. Nevermind.

And like I said, those guys all played first most of their careers. Check it out.

The last post you said "Are you trying to argue more players are moved to first than DH"

I am NOT making that argument.

I dont have to check it out. I know where those guys played. Just because the move to the much easier position of first happened early in their careers or in the minors doesnt really change the point.

They easily could have moved him to first this past offseason instead of paying $10M for Carlos Pena. Looks like a pretty good example to me..

I am NOT making that argument.

So, what you're really trying to say is that you agree with me because what I said is players who can't field their positions tend to get moved to DH, not first base.
This whole thing is silly. The point is that I really don't think you want Dunn at 1st. i think such a move is desperation at best, ridiculously stupid at worst because you shouldn't hide a defensive liability at first on a poor defensive team. if he MUST play the field, you DH Pierre and play Dunn in Left. I really don't see a better option. I;ve seen this boob fuck up way way too much to want to see him at first making 2 or better plays an inning. That's just me, I'd rather see him catching popups and fielding grounders than trying to scoop shit out of the dirt. I'm fairly confident that he would be by far the worst 1b in the league

For every example anyone can make for a guy being moved to first the same can be done for a guy moved to left.

There is no fucking way Soriano plays 1st with Castro at SS.
It will not happen.
I'd bet a steak dinner on it.

No way.
Dude, the guy led the league in putouts from left a couple years consecutively IIRC, and runners really don't want to test him out there. He ain't gonna play 1b with guys like Castro playing first. And with a new 3b coming in next year (I'm basically assuming Ramirez is gone), maybe it's Colvin over there at 3rd??? anyway, they're gonna want a solid 1b. I guarantee it won't be Soriano.

You said they always 'had' a gold glover at first. That wasn't true this off season.

They elected to go out and sign a gold glover rather than moving a butcher there.

I'd say they cut him before he plays first, yes absolutely, or he gets shipped off to an AL team to DH.
Shit man you probably see CASTRO at 1st before Soriano.

he gets putouts because EVERY runner with decent speed runs on him... he gets awful reads on the ball and he has a strong arm but no accurate.

No, not even close.

Players who cant play get moved to first base. Hard to DH in the Natl league.

What Im saying is, you clearly were unaware of the long standing tradition of moving people to first base who cant play their positoin. You scoffed at the notion.

Then I showed you proof and you questioned the era I was quoting.

So I gave you SEVERAL current cases.

Then you threw the DH thing in to make it look like I was saying more people move to first than DH.

Some become DH's
Some become First baseman

The first statement does not stop the second one from being true.

I get what you're saying. And I agree to an extent. Either way it does little good to RPB's argument. The Cubs knew they had a suspect infield coming in this year, KNEW they needed someone that can field 1st to make up for Castro's youth and enthusiasm (and nitwittery), and there was no way in hell Soriano was moving to the infield.

4 years at 19 mill a year..he needs a position to play..nobody is taking his contract, when he slows down a little bit more they will move him to 1st base unless the prince is making equal money.

Most of your current cases were guys who have been playing 1b most of their careers.
Some go to first true
More end up in Left.
More become DH's.
And a bunch end up looking for work.

I would bet that Soriano ends up at first. And he'll be okay over there. That's the whole point. Pretty much anyone who can walk and chew gum can be adequate at first base.

Cabrera actually had a pretty memorable few games against the team we root for while playing the OF.

Moralez played the OF in 09. Konerko started at 3b. Texiera played 3rd at some point as well

It's fucking early and Dunn is adjusting to a new league.

I'm pretty sure there is a mountain of data about guys who, for whatever reason, don't hit as well DHing as playing the field. we don't know enough about Dunn, as he has never been in the AL before to know if this effect will apply to him or not. Some guys can hit 4 times effectively and sit in the dugout, some guys can't. The correct question is what is the ideal configuration for this team, and all things being ideal, it is Dunn DH'ing, Konerko at first and Pierre in left. If Dunn continues to have trouble hitting for whatever reason, you move things around in the offseason.

The Big Donkey is paid do 2 things, walk and hit bombs. He is amazingly consistent in that regard, these are his walk and HR totals since 2005:

BB HR
114 40
112 40
101 40
122 40
116 38
77 38

Oh and Konerko played most of 98 at 3B and in the outfield

In 2003 Texiera saw time at 3b LF and RF

Morales spent 06-08 trying the OF
