What? Ron you got fired. That doesn't look good on your resume.

He also said that it will be good to go to a 3-4 defense to learn that and put it on his resume. What? Ron you took a demotion at San Diego. You are a line backer coach. You won't be calling the defense there.

Plus Ron, you are going to run a 4-3 if and when you get a head job anyway. Learing a 3-4 doesn't help you. You shouldn't tell an owner you will run a 3-4 just to get a job. That's not your style so why would you want to get a job promising that. So quit trying to spin it.

All of the other defensive coaches that got hired didn't have coaching two styles of defense on their resume. That wasn't needed for them.

Ron, you might be a good head coach one day. But stop trying to spin this. It's not good for you

So you think it would've been better if he said this is a major blow to his career aspirations and sets him back two to four years?

right....b/c saying:

F*ck the Bears! F*ck Lovie! and F*ck the Tampa 2! Screw the 3-4 and Norv Turner!

would have been a lot better....

He can say whatever he wants. I'm just pointing out that it's bull shit. Name me a coach that has to learn 2 styles of defense to get hired? You hire a coach based on his strenghths. You should want him to run what he knows and is best at.

How did he get fired? He just wasn't asked to come back from the way I understand it.

Either way it's pretty clear that he wasn't wanted.

If he leads another defense to being top 5 in the league he will get a head coaching job. I have to believe that one major factor to him not getting one is that he is viewed as not being the reason the defense is good. If goes somewhere else and has success then he will do well.

Now on the other hand, becoming a linebackers coach is not a good thing for his career. If he doesn't get a defensive coordinator job soon then his time may have passed.

The real story, whatever it is, will make it's way around the NFL coaching circles. They always do.
Everyone will know if this was really a personality conflict or a performance issue. Whatever the conflict with Lovie was, I'm sure it's already known to Turner & anyone else who cares to find out.

If Rivera really was a viable head coaching candidate this year, than he still will be one next year.
If he was just a Rooney rule candidate, and there were issues regarding his abilities, than this move can really help him if the bolts defense ends up being an aggressive, dominating force.

Given that linebacker coaches aren't typically given much credit for overall defensive success, I'd have to disagree with the above statement.

Not true TM.

Chico was the backers coach in Philly before he got the DC job here.
Singeltary was the backers coach in Baltimore before he got his SF gig.
In both cases they were recognized for the greatness of their defenses.

It seems that being the linebackers coach is the equivalent of the QB coach on offense. Both are just below the coordinator.

Anyway, in Rivera's case everyone knows the circumstances, and realizes that he may be well overqualified for his current position. He can use this upcoming season to address many of the 4-3, 3-4 defensive allignment issues that seemingly stopped him from getting promoted.

I'm not so sure it is personality based.
I would think it has more to do with a preferred defensive scheme.

he didnt get fired. his contract ran out and he isnt being brought back. fine line maybe, but i dont consider it a firing because he wasnt under contract with the bears anymore.

Fine, he may not have been fired, but from hearing Lovie Smith talk it is clear that his boss did not want him here anymore. Anyways, it doesn't matter, but the fact is that he had to take a demotion even if it will be temporary.

I thought you were suggesting the lb job would help him get a head coaching job, especially since you referenced the Rooney rule, which has no bearing on assistant jobs.

I'm sure Rivera will get another coordinator's job after next season, but I doubt this eventuality will be triggered by San Diego's performance next year. His three years as Bears defensive coordinator will be, by far, the most impressive entry on his resume. Since it's unlikely he'll now catapult himself from San Diego's lb coach to head coach of another team, I don't think his new position will help him achieve his ultimate career goal.
