It has been pretty standard that 300 career wins is a pitcher's ticket to the Hall of Fame. However, 300 game winners are just about a thing of the past. There are no active pitchers who will be winning 300 for years to come and the one with a chance at all is CC Sabathia. And to do that he'd have to have 14 wins per season for the next 10 years.

So what will be the new standard and what active starting pitchers today have a shot at the HOF?

The most likely guys are Halladay and Sabathia. I'd probably put Buehrle next. All of them have a lot more to do.

He's got 150 lifetime wins, a good winning percentage, a decent ERA+, and two no-hitters including a perfect game. He's never been seriously injured. I'd suggest his chances are better than a lot of guys who are flashier.

It isn't the Hall of Good. Nice numbers, but not HOF worthy.

Id put Tim Hudson and Derek Lowe ahead of Buehrle.

Lowe is a favorite of mine. I think he should get consideration for the Eckersely factor of his career.

Buehrle has a shot.

Not now. But there's no current starter that's a Hall of Famer if his career ended today. The only definite Hall of Fame pitcher on a current roster is Mariano Rivera.

So what do you project Buherle having at the end of his career that will make him HOF worthy?

I had Mark Buehrle on my radio show in October 2004 shortly after Maddux won #300.
Yeah, I know, you're happy for me.
I asked Buehrle if he thought he'd have a shot at 300 if he stayed healthy.
He said very bluntly that he was sure he could be a 300-game winner.
A very confident young man, as he had only won 69 games to that point.
He still has a chance of making it if he decides to pitch long enough.
It's tough to make it to forty or older.

I'm hesitant to make any kind of projection, but I'd say if he wins 250 games he has a shot. He's 32. That's about 12 wins a year if he pitches until he's 40. He's not dependent on some giant pitch so he should be pretty much the same as he's always been.

JORR, if he makes it to that point...but I am noture he wants to keep pitching until he is 40. He seems like a different cat. I can see him hanging em up when he is 35-37.

Maybe. But you know as well as I do, it's tough for most of these guys to walk away. They have to be forced to leave. Maybe Buehrle is different though.

If he makes to 250 in the manner you suggest, his career then really screams Hall of (Sometimes) Very Good (At Best).

Rehabbing, so technically he is still active. If he gets to 300 you will probably see him go into the HOF.

That guy may pitch 5 more seasons. He could get to 300 wins.

Guys, if that's the case, why did I see Jamie Moyer on ESPN's "Baseball Tonight" one night last week with Nomar Garciaparra and host Wendi Nix?

Because you were probably on some heavy narcotics.

Moyer is working part time with ESPN while he rehabs. He wants to come back in 2012.

Well, I'm an older guy just like you. I think we're going to have to look at career numbers for starting pitchers differently or there may never be a Hall of Famer again. I would suggest a 17 win season now is equal to a 20 win season when we were kids. Is that fair? There have only been 19 20-win seasons in the AL since Buehrle's career began.

That said, I'm a guy who believes an exclusive Hall is preferable. That horse has left the barn. If Buehrle gets to 250 I would suggest he compares pretty favorably to guys like Jim Bunning and Don Sutton. His best comparison is probably Jim Kaat- not a Hall of Famer, but better than several guys who are.
