In his early years, Kenny Williams was able to go out and get guys like Contreras, Dye, Hernandez, Thome...etc who came in trades where the team dealing them paid a good portion of their contract. But in recent years all he has done is spend a lot of money on guys who have not been worth the money paid them. Trading for a guy like Peavy, who had already spent over a month on the DL in 3 straight (at that time) seasons was a huge risk with the money he's paid. Claiming Alex Rios was another blunder in light of the money owed on his contract the Sox assumed. Then Kenny goes out and signs Dunn to another huge contract and he's been El Sucko. A lot of the guys Kenny used to aquire had huge upsides with low financial risks involved. Now all he does is throw money at the problems he identifies. Rather than spending big money on a guy like Dunn, he could have just had Viciedo take over the DH role (as I suggested this past winter) and saved a lot of money. Now he has nowhere to play Viciedo (who appears ready for prime time) and another contract he won't be able to move. A guy can only live off one WS title for so long....2005 was a long time ago.

Dye was signed as a free agent.

A Cub fan complaining about a high payroll with a bunch overpaid stiffs should really take a look in the mirror.

I'm just sayin...

1908 seems like it was yesterday.

At least Kenny had a "touch" to lose.

The Tank broke his hand about 2 weeks into to spring training.

Um...he still does this too:

Alexei, Phil Humber, Quentin, Gavin Floyd, John Danks...

He was done. He was insisting that he could still play RF every day, and he couldn't. It was time for him to go.

If he was really that good to go, someone else would have signed him.

He had a .793 OPS his last year, 27 HR, and new Hero Dunn is rockin a .665!
Dye's last year was almost identical to his 2002 with oakland. Was he done in 02?

If he had anything left, why did no one else sign him? All you had to do was watch him play, he was not good. His second half was bad, if I remember correctly. Explain to me why 29 other teams didn't bother to bring him in either. In my opinion, if that isn't a sign the guy is done, I don't know what is.

Every team passed on Sandberg. Major League GM's are just stupid. You lose this argument.

Don't go Boyd on me...

I'm willing to concede that Broken and Old Jermaine Dye would have probably been better than the Andruw Jones/Mark Kotsay/Manny Ramirez experiment, but I still have no issue with them not bringing him back.

Dye DISAPPEARED in the second half of the last two seasons he played here.

I agree with this. Dye was AWFUL the 2nd halves of '08 and '09

The second half of your statement belies the first half.
That's the mistake I was talking about.
I'm not sure what kind of clubhouse guy he was but how does a guy with 27 dingers not even get a chance?

Now that I think about it someone did offer him a contract... but he didn't like it and passed. So on some level some GM was thinking that he had some gas in the tank somewhere.

Are you whistler's brother?

Sox fans  . Really fellas? You're going to insult me because I've suggested that Dye wasn't done and Kenny might have made a mistake?
Pretty silly.

Dye was done. Argument over. This is along the lines of whistler's habit of starting threads about shitty players that the Cubs dumped years ago. I said it before, I'll say it again, I have no problem with them not bringing him back.

Pretty silly.

Dye WAS done with the Sox.

There was a chance for 29 other MLB teams to sign him-- or to at least invite him to Spring Training-- and nobody did. He was done because he did not want to be relegated to a DH or part time OF role. He wanted to play everyday and it was pretty clear that he could not play RF everyday and that he wore down and probably couldn't be productive for 400+ at bats a year as the 2nd half of 2008 and 2009 suggested.

So, apparently everybody else thought he was done as well.

Do the White Sox make the playoffs last year with Jermaine Dye?

Probably not.

OK, he was completely ignored by 26 other teams, it would seem...oh boy, I guess that means the Sox really should have brought back a guy with NO FUCKING KNEES to play right field every day, even though he combined for 1 good season that was spread over 2 years. Maybe they should have done it because he was the fucking World Series MVP. Have to honor the past while wrecking the present, right? If you truly watch as many games as you claim you do, you would have seen him laboring out there and known that based on that, and his attitude of not wanting to DH, that he was not marketable, therefore done.

FUCKING HOOTERVILLE!!!!!!

Wait a second, I thought it was White Sox fans who "cared more about the other team"......

Dye could hardly run. I thought for sure he would have gotten picked up at the trade deadline by some team in need of a hitter.... he wasn't.

He's retired now so it doesn't matter anyways.

I HATE many of the moves Hendry has made. I was very vocally opposed to the Cubs signing Soriano and wanted Carlos Lee instead at that time. I didn't want Bradley, but Abreau or Ibanez instead. I did not want Pena at all this season and said so BEFORE he was signed. The only moves I approved of lately, were the trade for Garza and bringing Wood back for low end money. Just because the Cubs are my team doesn't mean that I think Hendry is a good GM. Nor does Hendry doing his job poorly mean Kenny is good either. It's not like I am knocking Kenny while praising Hendry. I think the past couple years they have both been pretty bad. I would say that I am anxious for the 41 million that will be coming off the Cubs payroll this winter, but I have a lot of doubts about hendry's ability to use those funds (or some of them-as I doubt they will go back to the same level) wisely. I would NOT want Puljols for any term over 5 years and much prefer Fielder if they go after a 1st baseman.

But you are knocking Kenny and getting your facts wrong. As pointed out El Duque and Dye were signed as free agents, not traded for. Kenny has still gone after young guys with high ceilings and low money (Danks, Floyd, Quentin, etc). He also went out and get Alexei who looks like he might be turning into a monster at SS. Sure he's made some bad moves, but what GM hasn't? If you want to bash Kenny, bash the Swisher trade and the Rios waiver claim, but don't bash the "trading for" Dye.

I actually commended him for aquiring Dye, as well as Contreras, Thome, Hernandez and others dipshit. I knock him for the more recent deals that involved taking on high salaries with guys like Peavy, Rios, and Dunn. Deals that involved taking on low financial risk with good upside potential (Quentin, Danks and Floyd) were never a part of any criticism on my part. that was the way Kenny used to operate almost exclusively. Getting young talent with good upside and veterans who had high salaries in deals where their former team took on a portion of the salary. However, in the past couple years he has changed his mode of operation considerably by taking on (foolishly) the huge contracts of guys like Peavy, (in trade) Rios (waiver claim) and in free agency Dunn. Bad ideas-all of them.
