Regarding the destructable environments, it seems DICE is more fixated with the ability to eliminate cover rather than to create different pathways to objectives. Frankly, I think the latter is more important to making the gameplay truly unique.

Yeah, but not everyone can be in a plane. Cover and unique pathways are equally as important in my book.

They probably wanted a website address that would actually draw hits... :P

Truth be told, this is pretty good...I just hope it's actually EA that did it and not some random fanboy trying to stir the pot...

I got invited to participate in the Alpha Trial (I guess the pre-beta beta) version of Battlefield 3. However, they want me to do it on the PC. I'm not sure my PC is tricked out enough to do it. So I'll just wait for the regular Beta from the Medal of Honor pre-order.

I guess I have a hard time figuring out how they can make the console version of Battlefield 3 dramatically different than Bad Company 2? Essentially the same destruction engine and same number of online players. Do you just make the maps a bit bigger and add one or two more vehicles to each map?

IMU is right that the console version will play A LOT differently that the PC version (I would agree that the PC version is likely to be better). But for those of us that aren't going to invest in a new PC to play this video game, I think we'll be left with Bad Company 2 with slightly better graphics, Co-op mode and no funny commentary from Haggard and Sweetwater. Now I LOVED Bad Company 1 and 2, so I don't have a problem with this... but I suspect others will.

Won't be a day one purchase (I'm never buying another DICE/EA game with servers on day 1) but when I start hearing the online experience is enjoyable, I'll jump in. Looks really fun.

IMU, you're kinda derailing my post. I've already acknowledged that the PC and console version are going to be very different. What I'm asking is if the BF3 console version is going to be much different than BFBC?

I'll try one more time:
Do you think the CONSOLE VERSION of BF3 is going to be drastically different than BFBC2? By the way, BF3 is likely to have Rush and Conquest just like BFBC2.

I'm arguing is that the MAIN differentiation between PC BF3 and Console BF3 is that there is LESS players and SMALLER maps (they are shrinking maps and removing certain vehicles for the console version of BF3). And doesn't those two factors essentially make the CONSOLE BF3 play
similarly to BFBC... much moreso than PC BF3? I'm not really sure how hard that is to understand? I think it's just hard to read the screen behind that PC boner you have.

Also I have played BFBC2 and the guns handle similarly to BF2 and certainly differently than the COD franchise. Were you trying to suggest BFBC2 guns will handle differently than BF3? I doubt it from the videos I've seen.

I think you're finally getting at my point.

You and I are on the same page on MW vs. BF (BC or the original series). Long before you got to these boards I was the one carrying the flag for the Battlefield series. I love it. And while I wouldn't use the metaphors you are using, I would agree that COD games and BF games are very different. Lipid can attest to this... and I'm sure that we can dig up that old thread about this (in fact, I think this is where Lipid and I had a bit of a falling out).

I think the part you and I disagree on is that you see BFBC games as more similar to COD games. I totally disagree. I probably make too much out of the destructable environments, but I genuinely think they are MUCH more important to gameplay than "it looks pretty when the building falls". While the maps aren't BF size, they are SUBSTANTIALLY bigger than COD maps with many more avenues to attack an objective than with a COD map. Sniping is still very important as in the BF series. And while vehicles are less important, they still play a critical role in attacking an objective in either RUSH or Conquest.

I think also the gun physics in BFBC2 are going to be similar to BF3. I would be stunned if DICE changed them up from BFBC2 and Medal of Honor. And from the videos I've seen, it looks as if the gun mechanics of BFBC2 and BF3 are VERY similar (and disimilar from MW).

At the end of the day, maps are likely to be a bit bigger in CONSOLE B3 than BFBC2, but with the number of players being exactly the same, I doubt they will be dramatically bigger. That is my biggest reason why I think CONSOLE B3 is going to play pretty similar to BFBC2.

edit1: Bad Company 2's damage was 'pre-cooked', to coin someone else's term. It wasn't dynamic. It was just scripted areas that would damage, and they would only be 'x' way (not damaged) or 'y' way (damaged). There were no values between x and y. It wasn't dynamic. The damage was there or it wasn't.

If this is the case, I feel sorry for you console players. And this time, you can't get mad at me for saying that. You're getting screwed on getting a fantastic game because consoles can't handle it.

Your condolences aside, it sounds like you agree then. And what is your point on pre-cooked damage? The damage you are talking about is often times simply visual. Destructable environments are more than blowing up cover too. To blow a hole in a wall to "remake" the map (essentially create a new pathway to an objective) is a truly gamechanging aspect that DICE introduced to the world of FPS.

I'm familiar with Red Faction. But I'm talking mainstream, blockbuster MP titles. And often the destruction in the various RF series was the goal or just pretty to watch. In BFBC it was a wonderful tool to accomplish your goal. In my view, destroying cover, destroying a sniper perch, or creating a new pathway toward an objective made BFBC really standout versus it's peers (games like COD, Halo, Gears, Homefront). And I haven't seen as robust a class system in a game (where class types are truly unique) since Shadowrun... a pretty under-rated game, in my opinion.

I get now why messageboard folk have a difficulty discussing things with you. You have an opinion (often a genuinely good thought), but the moment there is a differing opinion, you get defensive, you dig in, and the you throw out various tangential thoughts to try to sound superior, aloof, or funny. Compromise or humility doesn't appear to be an avenue you're willing to take. You'll either be a great leader, a very lonely man, or both.

Watching imu talk about how PC FPSs are superior to console FPSs reminds me of whenever I hear Jim Lampley talk about how boxing is superior to MMA...you may be right, but the vast majority of people don't give a shit anymore and have moved on...

Cool.

Like I said, you may be right, but most people don't care...seeing as how most people choose to play on a factual inferior platform, according to you anyways.

I have access to the early beta next week (Sep 27th), but with Gears 3 in full swing and Rage coming out, I'm not gonna be able to touch it. So much good stuff coming out.

Nah... Medal of Honor was a fun game. I traded it in for $30, so $25 net. Not bad.
