Here's something to rumble & grumble about, brought to you by ESPN's Jayson Stark. While the Tigers were scoring 6 on the White Sox in the top 4th yesterday afternoon, Jayson was on ESPN Radio's "SportsCenter Sunday" offering a proposal that seems to make a lot of sense, but likely won't become a reality anytime soon.

Jayson said that an unnamed General Manager told him that players can no longer handle the 162-game grind that is the current Major League Baseball regular season. This unnamed G.M. also mentioned that there have been countless players landing on the Disabled List, and that players' use of pain killers & amphetamines have been directly linked to nagging aches & pains over such a long season. Stark thinks the time is now for MLB to trim the sked from the current 162 to maybe 154, considering the wear & tear on the players' bodies over a long period of the season. It's highly unlikely that MLB owners would want to lose necessary revenue to accommodate a reduced schedule.

I think it's a smart idea to reduce the schedule, especially when you consider that FOX Sports, Turner/TBS Sports & ESPN Radio have more than a passing interest in all of these playoff games that have suddenly stretched the season into November. That last part seems kinda absurd, but the San Francisco Giants & Texas Rangers didn't crown a World Series Champion until the first few days in the 11th month of the calendar year.

I'm all for it. 154 is plenty of baseball. Add two more playoff teams, give teams with the top two records early round byes or have ALL the playoff games at their stadiums.

Cut the regular season and stop having series. Play a team once and move on to the next opponent.

Well if you want to be really radical, shorten the games to 7 innings.

Just kidding. I think. Maybe not. I don't know.

Ricketts just inquired about a 62 game schedule.
