I want to get a new laptop and i will be using it a lot for the sports I coach. I download all our games on to my computer, make cutups and highlights. I started this last season and probably used about 30gb out of the 140 on my hard drive.

use code EMASUS027. its a gaming laptop, so it might be a little more power then you need, but for video editing the extra speed always helps. should be good futureproof machine too.

the only drawback i think is the 8lbs weight. otherwise, youre getting desktop speed for a heck of a lot lower then other high end brands. asus makes really good stuff too.

oh yeah, i second the toshiba satellite line... toshibas always have treated me well.

in 2009, i caught this one with a ~2100-2200mhz AMD athlon, 3gb of ram, and ~250gb HD space for like $400 with tax at best buy. i think i've STILL seen the fucker fetching upwards of like $600-700 on some websites. it takes a beating (and trust me, this has turned into my home terminal craptop and even tho there's duct tape going an arrow key doesn't work from moisture during the blizzard and the stereo headphone jack doesnt work since a ~4ft drop, like, it's still putting on along)

plus from what i've heard talking to people who work in computer-retail, toshibas have a good track record. i mean i've treated this one like utter shit and i'm amazed it's still here.

Agreed on the Toshiba line. We've had ours for over 5 years (Satellite L305-S5941) and it's been great. My daughter spilled a drink on it and it shut down. Waited about a month and fired it back up and have had no problems ever since.

he's not exactly producing these videos for hollywood, dude... i think just about anything reasonable would suffice.

thats really the problem. he didnt state what kind of camera or what demands he plans on having specifically. never stated a budget either.

but still, an intel laptop is worth a couple hundred over a amd one. that has been true for years now, ever since core chips came about. the battery life and heat output are enough for me to stay away from amd laptops. Llano might change those opinions though.

I'm using a realistic approach, I don't think I'll be held at fault with it. Do you think he is bringing out $3,000 video recording equipment for these sports?

Either way, there are Toshiba Satellite's that come with Intel processors. My custom built computer is Intel, my Toshiba laptop is AMD. I have no problems with either, based on what I use each for.

just because youre poor doesnt mean everyone else is. the laptop i listed is a steal for what you get. it would have a greater lifespan then the one you listed too. and i have no idea what camera he is bringing to games. dont get mad at me for something you dont even know.

i dont see how you can say its overpriced for what it is. its a top-of-the-line laptop at a midgrade price. it absolutely destroys that $600 toshiba you listed. that may be all coach needs, but i was thinking he might use the laptop for other things too.

like i said, we never even asked him what his needs are. he gave us too little information and we ran with our own ideas.

coach-

is this going to be used for other things? if so, what?

do you plan on using this laptop outside the house? (do you need small and lightweight, or do you plan on it staying in one spot most of the time?)

do you plan on it having abuse? (whats your budget? if its going to be thrown around a lot, there is no reason to buy expensive models)

do you care how long it takes to encode your videos? (if your laptop you have now is fast enough, let us know which model laptop it is. likely there is a new fusion/hybrid varient that we can find for you that will be much more power efficient and affordable- with a big storage drive of course).

does it need good speakers? or can you live with external usb speakers when you need that loud, clear audio?

- I currently own a HP 530 notebook that is 3 years old.

-Too upload a 5 minute highlight video it takes around 45 minutes to an hour. I really don't know if that is fast, slow or normal.

-I will be using it for both at home and work so nine months out of the year it will be moving on a daily basis ,multiple times a day. I have went through about 4 Ac adapter cords and had to have a new DC jack installed.

- Game Film editing, Internet, Excel, word and power point will be what it is used for.

- I don't have a set price range as money is not really a huge issue with this. Although I would prefer to spend under a grand.

yeah definitely scratch the first one i suggested, as its 8lbs and that wont be very portable at all.

immssedup17- are you familiar with the new Llano laptops coming out this month? one of those might fit his bill perfectly... as it sounds like he does just need a good all around laptop.

it might be a few more weeks before he could order one though, and likely itll only be HP with one until others follow soon behind.

btw, you can thank apple for every other laptop having a/c plug problems. they got a patent on the magnetic-hook power cords, so nobody else is allowed to make them. i think asus does about as good of a job as you can with traditional style plugs, but the day will come someday when that patent expires and those problems will be gone. that might be 25 years from now though.

i love amd as a company, they just havent been able to compete for years now. their desktop chips are still ok, but their mobile chips were just not worth it.

Llano is probably going to change it all though. its amd's answer to sandybridge, and its looking really good. fusion apu, so setup should be a breeze. great battery life + desktop cpu performance + a little gaming capability thrown in.
