Well, Benson got what he wanted; he's the featured back. Better not fuck it up like I'm afraid he will.

I don't think I like the idea of trading your starting RB to move up 26 spots in the second round.

I would think you could get more than that and, if you can't, keep him.

Do we know the extent of Benson's injury from SB41? I never really heard what the injury was.

You had to trade him or he would have left for nothing next season. So at least you got something, but I would have preferred the Bears not give them a 2nd rounder.

Really, who cares if you don't get anything for him after next season. He's a pretty good player and the team is capable of making another run next year. Especially in a league like the NFL where fortunes can change completely from year to year why not keep him, unhappy or not, and get something out of him? He signed the damned contract why shouldn't he honor it?

I agree. I don't care if he leaves for nothing next year. He's not leaving for much this year and at least you get one more run at a SB with him next year.

Also, I think he has shown his professionalism the past 2 years. I would have no worries about him doing his job well next year.

I really hope they have somebody pegged in that 37 slot and getting a solid #2 RB in to support Benson next year.

I think you just got your answer. Nothing serious. Look for the Bears to sign or draft another RB now.

Jets got a really good deal here, even if Jones only has one solid year in him.

He paid top dollar to Benson.
Got rid of his own FA signee
Moved up in the second round
Can now trade out of the first round, and 1st rounder money
Eased a bit of cap space for the Briggs hit
Could possibly get another 2nd rounder if he deals Briggs
(Theres no way, mind you morons, he gets a first rounder for Briggs)
And could fill some holes on the O line, LB,WR,TE, RB and secondary in the draft

This was a good trade. And it had to be done as well. My God, I'm hearing Zac and David Haugh gush over Jones. HE WAS AN AVERAGE BACK. Nobody seems to realize that. They keep on saying he gained 1200 yards in two seasons. Guess what. 13 or 14 backs this season gained 1200 yards. Everybody thinks that's a great number but it's not.

Cedric Benson will average 100 yards per game next year. So, yes, if he plays all 16 he will be a 1600 yard rusher. Book it.

You moved up 25 slots in the draft and unloaded a 30 year old back who was average and will only regress. Plus you knocked 4 million of your cap. Great trade. Anybody that doesn't get that doesn't really know the NFL.

You won't have holes at RB and LB if you hold onto Jones and Briggs. You do free up some cash, but don't you think they will sign a backup RB that will cost them some $$.

I agree that long-term it is better to parlay and stockpile some picks and save some cash. But, they are not stockpiling picks, just making them moderately better. I'm looking short-term for next year and I don't think this helps them for next year. I'd rather have Jones and Briggs than $3 million dollars, Corey Dillon (for example) as a #2, and a rookie LB (or a second rate FA LB).

I am not ripping this trade. I do think Angelo has a plan and I put faith in his track record to come through on it. But, on the face of it, this trade for me is "Meh".

You invested alot in Benson. Plus, a factor that hasn't been discussed here. Jones wanted out. He'd be a miserable bitch next year with out a contract and the fact that he'd have to split carries and not be able to show his worth in his contract year.

I don't get this from the Jets perspective at all. Willis McGahee is a free agent. He's the same average back that Jones is. But he's 3 or 4 years younger They could have signed him for the same amount of money as what they will give Jones. Plus they wouldn't have to drop in their 2nd round position.

Don't get me wrong on Benson. I like Benson a lot. I think he should be the #1 guy next year getting 20+ carries. Except, that was the plan this year too and the guy hasn't been able to stay on the field so far.

I just liked the tandem with Jones spotting him. If they get a solid guy to take those other 8-10 carries and catch a couple passes, then I'll like what they did here a lot more.

I'm just waiting to see what they are going to do here.

Actually. Benson was healthy for 18 straight games. He got hurt in game 19. But you're right. He wasn't getting alot of carries in those 18 games so it's not a good barometer.

I was referring to the beginning of the year when he was placed in as #1 and couldn't hold that. But, water under the bridge...let's see what the kid has got.

Like I said, I like him. I'm excited to see what he can do with a full workload.

I think Benson has the potential to be last year's Larry Johnson. All the Bears really need is a backup change of pace back. Maybe that could be adrian peterson, but Id like to see them pick up a speedy rb that can catch. I'll wait and judge the offseason moves after free agency and the draft.

I liked Benson too, but when he benched himself with a "tweaked" ankle in the SB, he lost A LOT of credibility.

I think it was a good trade. We got a number 2 when we should have probably gotten a 3 or 4.

Ill miss Jones though, hell of a work ethic, kept his nose out of trouble and was a tough SOB. His parents raised him and his brother well it would seem.

Well to say we got a number 2 would be wrong. We gave up our draft pick. So we didn't add a pick. Don't get me wrong. Moving up 25 slots in the second round is better then trading Jones straight up for a mid 3rd rounder for example. 25 slots is basically an entire round.

This is the best we could do and it was better then I thought we'd get. 1.) It was a limited amount of teams intersted in Jones. Maybe the Jets and two other teams at best. 2.) All teams knew the Bears had to trade Jones and wanted to trade Jones so they didn't have much leverage.

I don't think McGahee is a free agent...I think he just wants out of Buffalo.




God I hope not. Johnson's a hell of a back, but I hope they don't run Benson into the ground like they did Grand-mama Jr. Jamal Anderson set the NFL record for carries in a season and was worthless after that season. I wouldn't be surprised to see a big step back for LJ.

Really? In another thread, you just ripped Briggs for being all about the money, and Jones is the same way. They have the same agent, they're both demanding trades because they're not getting the respect (read: dollars) from the Bears. The only difference is Briggs has been getting a rookie salary for the last 4 years (slotted for the third round) while Jones cashed in on a big free agent pay day.
