Why are you so hung up with "batting leadoff"? If the guy who gets the most at bats on the team can't hit or get on base then it doesn't really matter. You'd be better off batting Konerko first if it's that big of a deal.

Bingo! I think all modelling shows that the order of the hitters is relatively insignificant and in fact, the best order probably features your highest OPS guys in descending order. That makes sense considering it gives your best hitters the most at-bats. We don't have any real world examples because baseball is so traditional and hidebound no team has tried it. Yet.

Adam Dunn should bat leadoff

The K's will be with less runners on base and his still high walk rate will come in handy.

Although Guillen would probably run him a lot.

Probably has one of the highest OBP on the team.

Dunn is having a bad season. But maybe there's something to that the SABRmetricians didn't consider.

When I was a young kid, the popular view was that pitchers walked hitters. The post
Moneyball view is that hitters draw walks. Obviously, the truth is somewhere in between. It requies the hitter and the pitcher.

I'm sure this possibility is something Sox fans don't want to consider. But Dunn has always been the most dangerous hitter on his terrible teams by a mile. Suddenly he was in a lineup with guys like Quentin and Konerko. There are far more times when pitchers have gone right at him. Dunn's results have not been good. His walk rate is down. Maybe the book on how to pitch him is being rewritten. Scary thought at $46 million over the next three seasons.

I'm probably one of the few fans that think things are shaping up perfectly for the Sox. They are still in the race and it's hard to imagine things could have gone worse for them. The law of averages are in their favor and the division is in reach. The Sox will own the division lead by August 1st.

I'm not as optimistic. This team remains maddeningly inconsistent, especially on offense. While I think guys like Gordon Beckham & Alex Rios will snap out of their first half funks, I'm not so sure about Adam Dunn. He's well on his way to breaking Dave Nicholson's 1963 White Sox record for strikeouts in a single season. While Dayan Viciedo will give the Sox offense an instant shot in the arm, I remember that Dayan didn't exactly walk the first time he was here about a year ago when Mark Teahen was on the DL.

I also have a bad feeling that teams around the majors will figure out Philip Humber and I think he'll get exposed after the All-Star Break. I'd also keep an eye on Mark Buehrle, who is not getting any younger and tends to fade like an old pair of Levi's jeans down the stretch. I also think Gavin Floyd is wild and I don't know what to expect from Edwin Jackson. I fear the bullpen might also burn out as well.

Ozzie did the same with Billy Koch,he klept trottin him outhere even though he sucked. I hear everyone say JP as Ozzie calls him is the worst player in baseball,but for what salaries are Adam Dunn has to be the worst of all time!

Players with a history of producing usually end up close to their career numbers. It's highly unlikely all of this guys continue having the worst season of their careers. They're close enough in the race where a big 2nd half would push them over the top. For some strange reason there are a lot of good/great players having down years and a lot of mediocre/bad players having great seasons. Pujols was one of those players having an off year and he was starting to turn it around before his injury. Same with Hanley Ramirez and Longoria.

I have no doubt the drugs- or lack of them- is largely responsible for that. I heard Spiegel talking about Konerko and whether he is suddenly juiced. Maybe he's the same guy he always was but suddenly he isn't facing juiced pitchers. Who knows? But I think with the focus on steroids and HGH, people have missed what a big part amphetamines played in the game.

The SABRMadMen with all of their fancy arithmetic, crazy numbers and zany calculations couldn't see was Dunn never playing on a team that mattered, never been in a divisional race, never been in the playoffs and never hit a homer that, in the long run, really mattered. Now that the heat is on, the Sox are "competitive" (well....they aren't a bad Nationals team....yet), a major market and he needs to produce.....the big man and SABR wet dream as completely sucked cock and fallen to pieces in stunning and violent fashion.

That or he is just having a really bad year.

Rios, Bacon, Morel, and Pierre should thank their lucky stars that Dunn is doing so poorly. Keeps the heat off of them and the horrible seasons they are putting together.

Morel is the 9th place batter and hitting .250 while really doing pretty goddam well with the glove. I'll take that out of the 9th hitter all the time in the AL. Point to Rios (who has seemed to start to heat up), Pierre, Dunn, and the early struggles of the bullpen more than anything else. A lot of issues with this team, Morel is way down the list.

Ozzie is hitting Dunn 3rd tonight against a left hander. Dunn said he's feeling better at the plate but I'd like to see some results before putting him back in the 3 hole.

I think the new strategy is to just stick him in one spot so he knows where he is starting.
