Cobb, 2nd Chance Motorsports split: UPDATES: Jennifer Jo Cobb was scheduled to start Saturday's Nationwide race 41st but when the command to start was made, Cobb was not in the #79 car. She refused to drive it after she said team owner Rick Russell told her he wanted her to start and park just before the race began. Here's what Jennifer Jo Cobb said about the situation: "There were rumblings all week about our team starting and parking. I have made a commitment to my sponsors, my fans and NASCAR that I'm not a start-and-park driver. I'm really serious about this. I have to work hard to prove to people that I'm serious about this. The conversation was never had with me until 10 minutes before the race started that I was to start and park. I had already bought & tires to run this race, so you can imagine, it was a blow both to my principles and my finances to hear this. As the owner of this team, he has the right to ask NASCAR to black flag me and said he would do so. After thinking about it & I tried to come up with a solution and there's also rumblings around town that he was going to surprise me and take me out of the car at California (next week). We have a five-race agreement that says that I'm racing for him and that's why I took the Nationwide points vs. the truck points. Because of the promises he's made, I've made decisions about my career and so 10 minutes before the race he told me not only am I starting and parking to save his car for California but that he would be replacing me as a driver in California and that he was the owner of the car and there was nothing (she) could do about it.
Car owner Rick Russell gives his side of what happened with Jennifer Jo Cobb before Saturday's race and what resulted. "Five minutes before the race, she took her crew and left. We had a crew meeting here on Friday morning and I explained to everyone what our purpose was here this weekend. In Vegas we destroyed a car through Kyle Busch's accident. We only had one car, so had to have the body completely replaced on the car except for the roof, decklid and rear bumper, so without a sponsor the total of about $16,000 about broke me to get this car together. We already had our entry in for here and California, so rather than try to roll this and lose this, we decided we'd come up here and I let everybody know we were here in a conservative mode. We would practice smart. We would qualify and we would make a few laps and then we would park the car and save it for California. She waited until five minutes until start time and told her crew chief and her other people that worked for her and they left. I'm sitting on pit road with a car without a driver and made myself look stupid, NASCAR look stupid, the whole bunch of us look stupid.'' Also, Rick Russell said that Tim Andrews will drive the team's car at California next weekend. (Hampton Roads)(3-19-2011)

UPDATE: Jennifer Jo Cobb, who walked away from her car about five minutes before the start of Saturday's Nationwide Series race in protest of having to start and park, will drive the #41 for Rick Ware Racing next weekend at California. Meanwhile, Rick Russell, who signed Cobb to drive the first five Nationwide races of the season for 2nd Chance Motorsports, plans to sue for breach of contract. Both parties said the partnership they formed before the season is over, but that is about all they agree on. Russell said it was clear after Cobb crashed at Las Vegas that he would park early at Bristol to preserve the car for California, noting he didn't hire a pit crew or buy tires to run the entire race. He said Cobb and her crew chief, Steve Kuykendall, purchased tires and hired a pit crew. He added that Cobb already had breached her contract because she didn't provide the engine at Las Vegas and Bristol as the contract states. Cobb insisted she lived up to the contract, noting a second party provided $15,000 toward a $30,000 engine she used at Vegas. Russell said Cobb knew well before the race she was going to have to park and that the move in front of a national television audience was premeditated.
----------------------------------
I don't think JenniferJo bought tires to start and park. Sounds like the owner is the d-bag here. I saw the attempted interview by Jamie Miller, the owner said "I can't hear you". What a jerk! If he had a sponsor or anything to plug, he would of said something. It was her sponsor and pit crew. They walked when told to start and park. JenniferJo knew she was on a limited contract(5 races) and couldn't get her name and sponsor out there from the garage during the race.

I think NASCAR should pull points and prizes for anyone who starts and parks- screw the 43 car field, it's usually too many anyway. these teams are just milking the system and everyone knows it.

I gotta side with Jennifer Jo Cobb on this. As an owner, either you are in this sport or not. Asking a driver & team to start & park is ridiculous. You're either in the race or you aren't.

well i believe the drivers story. what the owner says doesnt make sense. she wouldnt have even let the crew come to the track if she knew she was parking.

Why would you qualify for a race, but not race in it? What a huge waste of money to transport the car and crew to the race and not do anything. We really need a "Why Nascar Sucks" thread. Get on it, Ivan.

NASCAR drivers won't be happy about this.

Sources: Danica making NASCAR plans

By Terry Blount

Danica Patrick and her management team are working on a plan that would bring her full-time to NASCAR in 2012, sources said Tuesday.
Patrick hopes to finalize a deal soon that would have her race full-time in the NASCAR Nationwide Series next season. She would also race a few Sprint Cup events in 2012 before going full-time to Cup in 2013.
The plan includes Patrick continuing to compete in the Indianapolis 500 next year. Patrick is the only woman ever to lead a lap in the Indy 500. She will compete in her seventh Indy 500 on Sunday.
Which team she will race for, and other details, still are being finalized, sources said.
Go-Daddy.com, which sponsors her Indy car and the car she drives in the Nationwide Series, is expected to stay with her if she moves to NASCAR full-time. Go-Daddy also sponsors the No. 5 Cup car that Mark Martin drives for Hendrick Motorsports, but Kasey Kahne is replacing Martin next season.
Patrick, 29, has raced full-time in the IndyCar Series since 2005. She became the first woman to win a major open-wheel racing event when she went to Victory Lane in Motegi, Japan, in 2008.
Patrick has also raced a partial schedule in the Nationwide Series the past two seasons for JR Motorsports, which is owned by Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Her contracts with Andretti Autosport in the IndyCar Series and JR Motorsports in the Nationwide Series end after this year. Patrick said last week at Indianapolis that she hasn't made any decisions about her future.
"I suppose anything is possible," she said then. "But I know for me, I haven't made any of those decisions yet."
Her success in IndyCar has made her a national celebrity and one of the most recognizable sports figures in America.
Patrick's decision two years ago to test her skills in a stock car immediately led to speculation on whether she would leave IndyCar to race full-time in NASCAR.
Patrick is represented by IMG, one of the biggest sports marketing firms in the country.

NASCAR drivers think she's a Caller Bob...& a lousy driver. They would be correct on both.

So, then, what's the problem? She's money in the bank. Even the dumbest driver can see that.

And, if they really believe she sucks, then it's win-win for them.

Good Doctor, I agree with ya. They should be happy that she is going to bring with her the money and the fans that she will. If you look at the stands in any race I have seen this year, they are way down in attendance. She will be a draw both in the stands and on t.v., nothing but a win/win even if she sucks.

It would be better if she's good.

The attention will wane if she's running around in the back all the time. But, from the short time she's spent in Nationwide, I think she can compete there given a full schedule and see what happens.

It's bad enough that Seven Wallace drives in Sprint Cup races...add Danny to the field & watch out!
Ironically, neither of these drivers is racing because of driving skill.

Agreed, and with whatever Cup team she goes to it will help her out as it won't be a fledgling one. Although, Jr. sure has had his problems since he went to Hendrick. :(

I know you hate her. But, that aside, are you of the opinion that this is bad for the sport?

She can be competitive. In only 8 or 10 races so far, on a messed up schedule, she's improved. You can see it. She was running top 5 in points through the first 3 races, she was 1 of only 4 Nationwide drivers to have a top 5, and you could see her improving on the track.

Given a full schedule, she'll be pretty good in Nationwide and that is good for NASCAR because sponsors LOVE her and that's more money for everybody.

Well, yea...except she isn't competitive in either the Indy Car series or the Nationwide series.
The problem with Danny is that she attracts morons to the sport. I don't know if you go to races, but I go to a few each year & her fans are like the Johnny come lately fans who don't know a fucking thing about racing. Now if Danny were to attract more lesbians to the sport I suppose that could be a good thing, the problem is that most of them look like 300 Lb Packers fans.
I am enjoying the drop in NASCAR race attendance, just as I am the drop in Cubs game attendance. Tickets are more available & affordable now. Both are necessary market adjustments that are good for the fan. So, no...I'm not looking forward to the influx of dopey Danny fans to Sprint Cup racing.

There too much money to be lost when your race team has no money.

Most of the "start and park" cars have no sponsor. The team still gets the prize money for finishing
In the back of the field. There are also owners points to be gained. The top 35 are gauranteed a spot
In the next race.

Driving the car the whole race is too costly. Sunoco provides free fuel, but the Goodyear tires are $1600 a set of four.

Teams can go through at least six sets of tires a race. That's 9 grand right off the top. Also, if there is serious damage to the car,
Some teams may not be able to afford the repairs and not have a viable car for the next race.
All teams are supposed to have a backup car, but a lot of the independent teams just use
That one for parts on their main race car.

it would be funny if she makes it to sprint cup series and they change the restrictor plate rules and other rules so that its a drivers sport again and she never wins a race there either. then like at age 48 she goes to some arca race and wins and its national news

Jeffrey Earnhardt, now is that Kerry's son?
