Arbitration Eligible for your SAVE guy? Making $435K a year.

Not sure this is even a tough one. The Sox set the market on what they felt a closer is worth with the deal to Thornton, Mr Arbitrator, that's our case.

$4M?

That will be interesting. I don't think there's any way he'll get $4 million though.

Santos is arbitration eligible in 2013. You're really bad at this.

Did we ever get a definitive answer on Humber?

We have three opinions. None confirmed.

Maybe Mike North knows

Or maybe I just love watching the All Sox defense squad try to spin everything.

Santos was on the team this year? all year? Correct?
Last year? correct?
At the end of the year giving him 2 full years of service and should be close to top 17% in saves? already 7th.

With no contract at the end of the year? Thus making him eligible for Arbitration.

Here is Santos summary, but I guess Cots Contracts got it wrong too, because Keyser said so?

Sergio Santos rhp

1 year/$0.435M (2011)
re-signed by Chicago White Sox 2/11
1 year/$0.4M (2010)
contract purchased by Chicago White Sox 11/20/09
re-signed by Chicago White Sox 3/3/10
drafted by Arizona 2002 (1-27) (as shortstop)
ML service: 1.000

I am going to call this the IMU defense. When you really have nothing to say, you go with the Beating the Dead Horse, the Obsession, etc. basically the equivalant of the Female "Whatever".

Santos scenario I got from M&H this morning.

For all those unaware, this is a great site for MLB contracts and details.

http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2005/01/chicago-white-sox.html

Some also use KeyserContracts.com, which some rely on as well.

Santos will have exactly 2 years of major league service time after the season.

In order to qualify for Super 2 status, a player must have two-years and 122 days of Major League service.

You're approaching golden sombrero territory now.

Just from a fan perspective, Santos is a bit too walk-y.

This is somewhat offset by the fact that he is really tough to hit. Not Marmol-esque, but you get the idea. We call these guys "High excitement" type closers  (See Wilson, Brian pre-2010ish)

His walk rate is a little high but I'm not as worried about it with him because he's not pitching scared. He's not walking guys because he's afraid to throw a strike or doesn't trust his stuff. I think it's more that he's still learning how to command his pitches and what to throw in certain situations. He's learning on the job and with more experience he will just get better and better.

I am sure according to the Frank and Keyser WSOX website I am wrong, but...

A player with at least two but less than three years of Major League service shall be eligible for salary arbitration if he has accumulated at least 86 days of service during the immediately preceding season and he ranks in the top 17 percent in total service in the class of Players who have at least two but less than three years of Major League service, however accumulated, but with at least 86 days of service accumulated during the immediately preceding season.

Being Santos will be on the team for the entire season THIS year, I will go out on a limb and say this puts him as top 17% of players in the gap between 2 and 3 years.

Thus eligible for Arbitration as a Super Two player.

Keyser, may I ask what you suggest happens to Sergio Santos then after this year? as he is not eligible for arbitration and he does not have a contract? He must take the league minimum then?

I listen each morning, my radio goes off at 5:30 AM, it is on the Score. Radio gets turned off usually around 6:15 PM daily.

They discussed the possible issues the Sox will have moving forward.

I don't know how it can be any clearer than that.

He'll be renewed.

A club may unilaterally renew the contract of a player not yet eligible for arbitration if the club and the player fail to agree on a salary. A club may not renew a contract at a salary less than 80% of the player’s salary and performance bonuses the previous year or less than 70% of his salary and performance bonuses from two years earlier

To BF's credit, the rules are fairly complicated to understand. That being said, he should probably study up on them a little more because he has been unilaterally incorrect in the few discussions I've read where this has come up.

So you must like the reruns of 'Tyler Perry's House of Payne', and the teenage soap operas on WGN because you tend to just "happen to flip over" to the Sox TV broadcasts to hear Hawk & Stone say something you can start a thread about...

When you choose to ignore the issue of the 2nd part of the SUPER TWO rule, yes I can be wrong pretty easy

as well as the 17% with the most service that is more than two but less than three years (provided they have played at least a half-season in the majors in the preceding season)

Tim Lincecum, played 2 Full years in 2008 and 2009, nothing more. Just like Santos will this year barring injury. Lincecum was a Super 2 case and got $8 mill and $13 mill for 2010, and 2011....AVOIDING ARBITRATION.

You think the way it is structured the Sox can FORCE Santos to take another $435K deal????

Guess I missed the part that 2 time Cy Young winners get Arbitration, but closers don't?

My mistake, I scanned the thread and thought your position was that he was FA eligible. Lincecum was a historic case, as I don't think anyone ever won 2 CY awards before they were arb eligible.

If Santos does indeed earn "Super-Two" status, he is still arb-eligible 4 times, so I don't think you're going to see him going anywhere anytime soon.
