The Sox start with nine games in the division on the road, then have a tough homestand. By the end of that homestand it will be August, so you're either in or not by that point.

At what day, and at what record, do you decide whether you are in or out if you are the Sox GM? You could use games back instead of record if you prefer.

Having watched Kenny general manage over the last 10 years I will be shocked if he cuts bait no matter how many games back they are at the deadline.

After the home series against Detroit, July 27th. If its more than a 4 game deficit at that point, you sell. Even if its 4 or 5 games, but the team is say still 1 or 2 games under .500, I would sell. That means that during this stretch of division games, the team would have barely played .500 and still not gone on a really hot run. They don't have to win 8 or 10 games in a row, but if they really want to show the baseball world (and themselves) that they can win this division, they need 7 wins on this upcoming road trip, and then come back home and take at least 2 of 3 from the Tigers.

So, 10 wins before the end of July. You go 10-5 now, and you're in it. If the Sox do that, they should be within 2-3 games of the top of the division at worst. If not, they will be at or under .500 and probably 5, 6 games out like they are now. That would still give Kenny and company 3 full days to work out trade(s) for some of the guys who will not be here next year.

The way Kenny and Ozzie operate, they would really need to tank this road trip for that to happen. And that could happen, but I doubt it.

Thats my $0.02

Maybe that's true, but that's also crazy. If you go 2-7 on the road trip (not saying that will happen), you have to cut your losses.

I would say if you go .500 in the next 12, all against AL Central competition, and you are within six games you might as well go for it. There's a lot of KC on the schedule yet so that's good.

I'm not saying it's the right thing to do but there are other factors at play. There are still fans who scream about the white flag trade and vowed never to come back and that was almost 15 years ago. I'm sure they ran through this scenario before the season started and decided they will go for it with anything short of a catastrophe.

I don't think you cut unless it's just a few guys that aren't part of 2012. They have marketed this as "All In', and the Sox have made amazing runs before. You have to see if these dogs can turn it around, and I am pointing at you Rios and Dunn because you are going to need them next year. You'd hate to go into 2012 not knowing if Dunn is done.

The problem is that I don't really know who would have value outside of CQ.

They may stay "all in" simply because there isn't much benefit to throwing in the towel.

A stupid GM will give you something for Juan Pierre, though I suppose trading Juan Pierre isn't exactly throwing in the towel. But you could throw Dunn (money issues aside), Pierzynski (10/5 issues aside) and Konerko (ditto) on that list too.

After this roadtrip. The Sox won't win any of these series because they haven't shown they can beat opponents within their own division. They may be barely up on Cleveland, but besides that smart money is to bet against the Sox.

I'm really getting sick of every July/August signaling the end of the Sox season. Something(s) need to change.

I agree with Frank: You make the call after the Tigers series the week of 7/25.

History is not on the White Sox side since Ozzie started filling out the lineup card in 2004. I think they will be "ALL OUT" July 28th after the Tigers finish the job and before the Red Sox make their only visit to "The Cell" at the end of the month.

Disappointing thread. I mis-read it as "Cute Date".

With one notable exception, of course.

NSJ, you are correct...When they won it all in 2005, but I was referring to the post All-Star Break.

SHARK is correct. I believe the only time the Sox have had a winning record post AS break under Guillen (other than 2005, in which the first half was significantly better) is 2008.

Tonight, the White Sox will be dealing with Tigers' righty Justin Verlander. Tomorrow, they'll face Max Scherzer and Brad Penny faces these guys Sunday. Gavin Floyd, SCORE Producer Herb Lawrence's buddy Edwin Jackson & Philip Humber provide the Southside opposition in the weekend series at Detroit's Comerica Park. I don't like their chances of improving their 8-16 A.L. Central division record this weekend...

7-2 from now until the 31st to get to that 10 win mark.

If they don't (can't) do that, they're done. They might hang around in the standings due to a bad division, but I am not convinced that this team has what it takes to win the AL Central.
