They would likely be better because Peavy's money would be spent on a pitcher or position player who actually played the majority of each season.

You'd think so right? But Adam Dunn and Alex Rios aren't exactly helping out much. Neither is Edwin Jackson or Gavin Floyd for the most part.

Edwin Jackson or Gavin Floyd > Dead Jake Peavy

They could get back another stop-gap 5th starter type (a non-prospect) to fill out the rotation until they decide (if they do) to use a 4 man rotation in September, but the uncertainty surrounding Jake Peavy makes it difficult to trade Edwin Jackson at the deadline, a move that would make a lot of sense given that he's not going to be with the team next season, and teams needing starting pitching.

The Rays designated right-handed reliever Adam Russell for assignment.

Maybe he'll see Peavy down there!

I'm pretty sure you can say both teams 'lost' this deal as has been mentioned, the Padre probably less so, considering the financials. Richard is no JR Richard, but at least he has given SD some low-cost league average innings. Peavy has been an unmitigated disaster.
