got the tax return so....

I bought:
M-Audio BX5a studio monitors (they sound awesome btw)
18 Dunlop Jazz III guitar picks (black)
Danelectro Tremelo Pedal
Danelectro Vibrato Pedal
Boss Compression/Sustainer Pedal
Korg Guitar GA 30 Tuner
Two guitar hanger wall mounts for my two acoustic guitars that are virtually unplayable and will now be considered "art."

I love buying new gear....is there anything better than buying yourself some stuff and then getting to try it out?
seriously....all things considered, could this be better than sex?

You like the Boss better than the Dyna?

Yeah Doug. Thoughts please on the compressor. I went with the BBE instead of the Boss for my bass and have been pleased, but it was a coin toss.

well,
i've never had any issues with purchasing boss/roland gear for one. but boss pedals usually have 1-2 more knobs (to finer manipulate sound) which is a big sell, being a former digital-rack nerd et al.

100% of the time boss pedals have done what i've expected them to and i currently own and operate five of them in my rig with the 6th on the way.
so, i guess i'm more likely to just buy one of them before anything else.

unless i'm buying a cheap noisemaker like the danelectro vibrato and tremelo. if i get one good "part" or song idea out of those things, it's was worth the investment anyway...

are there better brands of pedals? maybe, probably...
i love the bbe sonic maximizer. i have a 362 rack but, i'm thinking of getting the pedal and an e.q. pedal combined with the graphic e.q. currently in the efx loop with the bbe 362.

anyone have a big muff pi?

you could get a 4x12 for less than $500....but that's about it.

Sorry Doug, my dreams of being a rapper died about 2 years ago. I just didn't have love for it, even though I knew I was good.

OK Doug, I'm game for some more gear talk.

I had just heard not great things about the Boss comp. It seems like it was about being more noisy than most. I haven't really messed around with comps much though. Its next on my list to look at, that or a chorus.

Right now I got an Ibanez->Original Crybaby->Boss DS-1-> Tweak-O (a homemade booster w/ some clipping)->Line 6 DL4->Small SS Marshall Combo Amp with switchable gain channel.

I'm pretty happy with it. I made the Tweak-O from a kit from SmallBear Electronics, but added a few modifications.

cool...
i always wanted to build a pedal.

57 fender reissue>digitech whammy>vox wah>boss dd6 delay>boss ce1 chorus>danelectro flanger>boss sd-1>boss noise gate>peavey triple xxx through a marshall lead 1960A.
and a bbe and a bbe 362 in the head efx loop...
i have a ds-1 but i'm not using it currently.

the gate pedal is an absolute necessity.

To build isn't too hard really. I ran into some message boards (imagine that) about it and just read for a few months. Then I picked out an easy one and decided to give it a try. I'm no expert solder guy, but its not real hard. The kit I used came with a perf board with is just a small board with a bunch of holes in a grid. The kit tells you where to put everything so you just have to be sure the solder doesn't short out to a nearby hole, but is strong enough. The pedal isn't a great sound, but it was a good start. You can download a schematic of just about everything. I'm actually thinking of modifying the DS-1 since that is a real poplular way to go also. Turn a $40 pedal into a $200 boutique sound.

So are you in a band or just a noisemaker for personal enjoyment?

but for the past 5 years just writing and recording with a core group of guys in the band(s). we plan on starting with acoustic open mics this summer.

Interesting sound you got there, doug. I like it though. Stinkfinger informs me you'll be thrashing around at Mastodon in May, BTW?

God I just love that name, The Big Muff. You're a guitar guy right? Our regular bass player has one that he uses and it does some pretty cool shit to his tone. Not sure what it would do with a guitar tone though.

I almost got the 362 when I was gonna drop dime on rack equipment and a new rig, but the funds dried up with other crap. Ended up getting the stompbox version which has worked great for me.

yeah, i'm a guitar guys.
so the bbe pedal sounds good then....sweet. i figured it would. i'm totally leaning in that direction. kinda hard to spend money on another version of the same thing though. i suppose if i start playing electric sets again, i'll get rid of the 2 space rackmount.....

dumped the new pedals into my board last night. i need to by a 9v wall wart though. and fit in my flanger. time to make some custom cables....
the vibrato is pretty cool, the tremelo is killer!, and the CS-3 does exactly what I expected. really smoothes out the leads. a little noisy, but not too terrible....the ns-2 covers it up nicely.

yeah....big muff! I have to own one for name alone..
:)

jazz III picks are the way to go. no more surfboard classic fender style flat picks for me ever again.
